Lady Ramblers mired in losing streak

- By Scott Herpst

The No. 3-ranked LaFayette Lady Ramblers traveled to Tunnel Hill this past Thursday for a Region 6-AAAA showdown with the No. 2-ranked Lady Bruins, looking for a sweep of the season series.

Instead, LaFayette lost the game and their lead in the region standings.

Northwest (7-1 in Region 6-AAAA) parried LaFayette’s two firstinning runs with seven of their own in the bottom half of the frame and never looked back in a 9-4 victory.

LaFayette dropped to 6-2 in the region.

The Lady Ramblers knocked Northwest pitcher Shaylen Sutton out of the game with two outs in the top of the first. Madison Pettigrew belted a solo homer and Shyenne Youngblood singled in a run, but relief pitcher Cara Rann would get out of the jam and LaFayette would manage just two more runs the rest of the way.

The Northwest offense would get going in the bottom of the first. Pettigrew issued three straight walks and later hit a batter, while three singles and a fielder’s choice brought in seven runs, signaling an early exit for the sophomore pitcher.

The Lady Ramblers would get solo runs in the top of the second and the top of the fourth, but were frustrated by a lack of timely hits. LaFayette left two runners on base in the four separate innings.

Nicky Yancy had three of LaFayette’s 10 hits total, while Shelby Adkins added an RBIsingle.

LaFayette ended up losing four tough games at the SCORE International Invitational at Chattanooga’s Warner Park over the weekend.

They dropped a 5-3 decision to Wesleyan (No. 2-ranked in Class A Private), a 5-4 decision to unbeaten Rockmart (No. 1-ranked in Class AA), an 8-7 decision to North Murray and a 3-2 decision to LFO (winners of seven straight)

The Lady Ramblers entered the week with a 13-6 overall record.
