COMMUNITY · Walker County Department of Family and Children Services will hold its annual “meet & greet” on Tuesday, Sept. 26. The public is invited to visit any time between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to tour the facility, attend informatio­nal presentati­ons and find out more about this agency and its commitment to serving Georgia’s children and families. COMMUNITY · LaFayette First United Methodis Church, 301 South Main St., will host “SWEETS & TREATS,” a fundraiser for local missions, on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 7-9 p.m.. The fundraiser is a delicious event featuring desserts along with informatio­n about local charities. The fundraiser also has a live auction where ladies will have the opportunit­y to bid on a variety of gift baskets including a weekend getaway, BBQ dinner, Dinner party for 10, handmade wool throw and blanket, and lots of other goodies. COMMUNITY · Every October the quiet, peaceful area around Prater’s Mill hosts the annual Prater’s Mill Country Fair. Situated on the banks of the Coahulla Creek, it is the perfect place to host the fair’s 46th anniversar­y, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14, and Sunday, Oct. 15. At the fair, visitors can take selfguided tours of the operating gristmill, the country store,

Shugart Cotton Gin, Westbrook Barn, and 1898 Prater’s Store. Nearly 200 artists and craftsmen will sell their crafts. Look for live demonstrat­ions by the blacksmith­s, quilters, weavers, and woodcarver­s. Fair hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7; children 12 and under enter free. There is no charge for parking. Visitors are urged to dress casually and wear comfortabl­e shoes. Prater’s Mill is located on Ga. Highway 2, about 10 miles northeast of Dalton and 30 miles south of Chattanoog­a, Tenn. Take I-75 to the Tunnel Hill-Varnell Exit #341, drive north 4.5 miles to the intersecti­on with Ga. Highway 2 at Varnell, turn right and continue 2.6 miles to the mill. COMMUNITY · Rossville Community Ministries, a ministry of Rossville area churches, is a food pantry stocked with non-perishable food to help families or individual­s in the Rossville area. Non-perishable food items, cash donations and volunteers are needed. The Rossville Community Ministries is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon until 3 p.m. They are at First Baptist Church of Rossville, 100 Spring Street.
