Local high school golfers named to 2017 All-State teams

The Georgia High School Golf Coaches Associatio­n recently released its All-State teams for the 2017 season and several area golfers made the cut.

Gordon Lee swept the Player of the Year Awards for Class A Public. Macall Miller was the Girls’ Player of the Year after winning the individual state title, while her teammates Jessica Hickman and Hannah Willerson were both named to the first team.

Willerson has since moved to Rome and now attends Darlington.

Hickman placed fourth individual­ly at state, while Willerson tied for fifth. Gordon Lee tied for the team title with Portal.

On the boys’ side, Tucker Windham was named as the Boys’ Player of the Year. Windham, along with fellow first teamers Justin Hickman and Gray Weldon all tied for individual championsh­ip honors at the state tournament and together they helped the Trojans shoot a Gordon Lee single-round record of 303 as they won state by 42 strokes.

In Class AAA, Ringgold Gavin Noble and Miranda Rich were both named to the first team. Noble, who qualified for state as an individual, tied for fourth overall.

And in Class AAAA, Gage Smith was a first team pick from LaFayette, while teammate Cole Ingram was named honorable mention.

Ingram was also the area individual champion, while Smith was the runner-up. At state, Smith placed eighth and Ingram tied for ninth in the 18-hole, rain shortened event.
