Heritage 3, Gilmer 2

With outfield fences that aren’t more than 200-225 feet from home plate, inside-thepark homeruns are something of a rarity in fastpitch softball, even for the fastest of players.

But the sport’s toughest hit does occasionally happen and it happened for the Heritage Generals last Monday night….at the most opportune time.

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Bailey Christol delivered the most important hit of her young high school career.

Christol sent a shot into the left-centerfield gap and circled the bases in time for the walk-off that gave Heritage a clutch home win over Gilmer.

Christol was the only Heritage player with two hits on the night, while five more Generals had one hit, including a double by Madi Morris. Morris and Katie Proctor also had one RBI each.

Taelyn Bates started in the circle and pitched five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. She finished with three strikeouts.

Rachel Gibson worked the final two innings to get the win in relief. She ended the night with four strikeouts.

The Generals closed out the regular season in style this past Thursday with a 15-1, 13-0 sweep of a doubleheader at Southeast Whitfield.

In the opener, Heritage collected 12 hits and took advantage of six Lady Raider errors. They led 3-1 going into the bottom of the third when they

erupted for 12 runs.

Morris was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored, while Proctor was 2-for-3 with a homer, an RBI and two runs scored. Ansley Bice was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Christol had two RBIs, while Frogge and Morgan Phillips both had one RBI.

Bates allowed just

two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The run she gave up was unearned.

In the nightcap, Morris and Proctor both homered once more and combined for nine RBIs in a 13-0 drubbing.

Morris was 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in five, while Proctors scored twice and knocked in four. Christol was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Frogge went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Ashley Faulkenberry

had a double and two RBIs, while Bice was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Morris pitched all four innings for Heritage (16-8, 7-5), giving up one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.
