State Volleyball Roundup: LaFayette, LFO, Gordon Lee eliminated in first round

The LaFayette Lady Ramblers, who set a new program singleseas­on record with 40 victories this season, unfortunat­ely suffered their 13th and final loss of 2017 this past Thursday with a fourset loss at No. 5-ranked North Oconee.

The Lady Titans won the opener, 25-14, only to see LaFayette respond with a 27-25 victory to tie things up at a set apiece. However, North Oconee would control the final two sets, 2517 and 25-12, to score the win and advance to the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

Senior Katie Dixon had 14 digs and eight kills, while Emily Redden had 29 assists in five digs in her final high school match.

Jillian Morgan collected 14 kills, eight blocks and seven digs for the Lady Ramblers (40-13). Gracie Stier picked up 19 digs, six kills and two aces, while Bailey Tarvin had 24 digs and two aces. Other contributo­rs for the Lady Ramblers included Sarah Ray (6 kills, 3 digs), Elaina Kirkendoll (2 digs, 3 blocks) and Michaela Hobbs (12 digs, 2 aces, 2 assists).

Along with Heritage’s victory over Jefferson, Northwest Whitfield picked up a 3-0 win over Madison County, but Southeast Whitfield was beaten, 3-0, by St. Pius X, giving Area 6 a 2-2 mark in the opening round.

LFO falls to East Jackson

The season came to a close for the Lady Warriors last

Wednesday as they dropped a 25-9, 25-19, 25-10 decision at East Jackson in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament.

Macey Gregg had 20 serve receives to go with nine kills, three digs, two blocks and an assist. Miyah Foster picked up five kills, five assists, two aces and 15 serve receives. Madi Graham was on the receiving end of a dozen serves and added seven assists.

Other top

contributo­rs included Symerel Bennett (3 kills, 3 blocks), Jerriale Jackson (4 serve receives, 4 blocks, 2 kills, 2 assists) and Alesya McBurnett (14 serve receives, 5 assists, 3 digs, 1 ace, 1 kill).

The Lady Warriors finished the year with a 12-31 overall record.

Gordon Lee eliminated in Fairburn

The Lady Trojans won their opening set, 25-16, on the road in the first round of the Class A state tournament. However, host Landmark Christian

would right their ship at Gordon Lee’s expense, sweeping the final three sets, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-21.

Aubree Yancey and Summer Fitzpatric­k both had eight kills in their final match for the Navy-and-White. Gracie O’Neal added six kills to go with eight digs and three aces.

The Lady Trojans finished the year with a 33-12 record. It was Gordon Lee’s fourth straight season with 30 or more wins, while the 33 victories was a single-season record for the program.
