LaFayette boys add to Region 6-AAAA lead

The LaFayette Ramblers maintained their grip on the Region 6-AAAA lead with a home win over Heritage on Friday night before they stepped out of region to pick up a road win at Excel Christian to cap the weekend.

LaFayette boys 48, Heritage 33

The Ramblers upped their record to 6-1 in region play with a solid defensive effort.

Dee Southern had 15 points and Alex Kelehear had 14 points as the Ramblers limited the Generals to just 20 total points over the final three periods of play. Tyrese Marsh and Rylan Russell had eight points each for LaFayette. DeCameron Porter also chipped in with three.

LaFayette boys 69, Excel Christian 39

The Orange-and-Black made the trip to Cartersvil­le on Saturday afternoon and returned home after throttling the Excel Christian.

The Ramblers (18-1 overall) connected on 13 threes as a team, including five each from Kelehear and Southern. Kelehear finished with a game-high 23 points, while Southern finished with 19 points and grabbed a teambest 17 rebounds.

Andrew Pendergras­s finished with eight points. Russell had seven points, while Asa Deal, Vyshonn Daniel and Jalen Ramsey had four points apiece.

LaFayette girls 51, Gordon Lee 38

With Excel Christian not fielding a girls’ team this season, the Lady Ramblers provided the opposition for the Lady Trojans last Tuesday and took the game from their county rivals.

Mykeria Johnson had a team-high 16 points to go with three rebounds and three steals. LaTyah Barber continued to put up numbers with 13 points, nine assists and seven steals. Megan Wilson added eight points, five boards and six steals, while Marquila Howell (five rebounds) and Alyssa Estus (four rebounds) both finished with seven points.

Heritage girls 68, LaFayette 39

On Friday, LaFayette hung tough for a quarter before the Lady Generals pulled away with a big second period. The Lady Ramblers dropped to 2-5 in Region 6-AAAA with the loss.

Johnson paced LaFayette with 13 points. Howell had 10 points with Wilson and Hailey Bryant each scoring four. Imani Cook, Shelby Eaton and Anna Valle had two points apiece, while Barber and Grace Hamilton each finished with one.

Following Tuesday’s tests at Northwest Whitfield, LaFayette will head to Pickens on Friday as the region slate continues.
