Walker County Extension Office is hosting

egg candling classes on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Walker County Ag. Center in Rock Spring. The Georgia Department of Agricultur­e will teach the class, which is required to obtain an egg candling certificat­e. Anyone with a backyard flock who plans to sell eggs to individual­s or at a farmer’s market is required to have this certificat­e. There is no cost for the class and you may choose your class time: 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon or 2 p.m. To register, call the Georgia Department of Agricultur­e at 770-535-5955. COMMUNITY • Thinking about having a backyard flock? Join Wade Hutcheson of the University of Georgia Extension Service in Walker County as he hosts a workshop on backyard chickens. The workshop will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14, from 9-11 a.m. at the Walker County Ag. Center in Rock Spring. Participan­ts will receive informatio­n about poultry housing, breeds, feeds and needs. COMMUNITY • The Four Points Inc.’s 12th annual Father-Daughter Dance to be held on Friday, Feb. 15, from 6:309:30 p.m. at The Colonnade in Ringgold. All ages welcome. COMMUNITY • Walker County Commission­er Shannon Whitfield invites residents to share their ideas to start the New Year. Whitfield is hosting a series of community forums in February to discuss what’s working well today, along with goals and opportunit­ies for the future. Eight forums will take place (three of which have already been held) in different communitie­s across the county, so residents can attend the one that is most convenient for them. Each session begins at 6 p.m. and features a brief introducti­on, but the majority of each event will consist of public comment and discussion. “Over the past two years, community input has led to enhancemen­ts in fire protection, updates to ordinances regulating animals and alcohol, safety upgrades on Nickajack Road, clean-up of blighted property and our annual tire amnesty day, among other improvemen­ts,” said Whitfield. “I look forward to hearing about the topics important to folks in Walker County and their thoughts on how we can improve county services.” Community forums will be held at 6 p.m. at the following locations: Monday, Feb. 18, at LaFayette-Walker County Library (305 S Duke Street, LaFayette); Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Center Post Community Center (8125 GA-337, LaFayette); Thursday, Feb. 21, at Fairyland Elementary School (1306 Lula Lake Road, Lookout Mountain); Monday, Feb. 25, at Mt. Pleasant Community Center (5270 GA-157, Rising Fawn); Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Chickamaug­a Civic Center (1817 Lee Clarkson Road, Chickamaug­a). Two forums have already been held: Monday, Feb. 4, at Cedar Grove Community Center (5395 W Cove Road, Chickamaug­a) and Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Rossville Civic Center (400 McFarland Avenue, Rossville).

MEETING • WREA (Walker Retired Educator Associatio­n) meets Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at Rock Spring United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Guest speaker will be Lacy Wilson, president of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce.

MEETING • The Walker County Republican­s Party will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Chickamaug­a Civic Center, 1817 Lee-Clarkson Road. This is just behind the Chickamaug­a Library on the east side. At 6 p.m. there will be a snack and chat time, with the meeting beginning at 6:30. The special speaker will be John Watson, Georgia GOP Party chairman. This meeting is free and open to the public.
