Heritage earns tennis sweep against Ringgold

Catoosa County rivals Heritage and Ringgold met at Ringgold High School last Tuesday to open the 2019 tennis season and it was the visitors who made the drive back to Boynton with a pair of hard-fought victories.

In the boys’ match, Heritage scored a 4-1 win. Ringgold claimed victory at No. 1 singles as Edward Cho defeated Davis Kilgo, 6-2, 6-3. However, the Generals would win the final two singles matches. Cooper Terry beat Brian Kim, 6-4, 6-1, while T.J. Halloran defeated Camden Tunnell in a three-setter, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

In doubles, Ethan Bone and Montgomery Alred teamed up to beat Ty Williams and Andrew Haney, 6-1, 6-1, while Eric Wootten and Will Veal picked up a forfeit in the other match.

On the girls’ side, Heritage won all three singles matches to pick up a 3-2 victory. Anna Grace Skinner defeated Zoie Metcalf, 6-2, 6-1. Bailey Christol earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Harper Haupt, while Morgan Phillips defeated Olivia Brumfield, 6-0, 6-1.

Sydney Pittman and Rachel Akers picked up a doubles win for Ringgold with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Autumn Viars and Annie Swanson. Ringgold also won at No. 2 doubles as Ashley Propst and Beth Murdick on by forfeit.

The Ramblers and Lady Ramblers also raised the curtain on the new season this past Wednesday and split a pair of matches against Chattooga in Summervill­e.

The Ramblers scored a 3-2 win over Indians. Andrew Long won 8-5 over J.J. Roberts and Tyler Massingill scored an 8-3 win over Carter Lowenburg. Chattooga’s singles win was a 9-8 victory by Hamilton Ratliff over Isaiah Southern.

In doubles, Dakota Foster and Cole Cavin scored a 9-8 win for the Indians over Damian Brown and Anthony Collins. However, LaFayette would get the all-important third point as Dylan Parker and Justin Lawrance beat Gary Beach and Colin Drawdy, 8-3.

Chattooga turned the tables in the girls’ match with a 3-2 win. The Lady Indians won two singles matches. Mia Crider defeated Micaela Hobbs, 8-4, and Jessica Brown beat Gracie Hamilton, 8-3. The Lady Ramblers got a point as Greenlee Fountain doubled up Cierra Lewis, 8-4.

The doubles matches were split. Chattooga’s team of Gracie Nixon and Emily Deberry defeated Aubrey Steadman and LaTyah Barber, 8-3, while LaFayette’s Lauren Torbett and Caylee Purcell scored an 8-4 win over Mansi Patel and Aliyah Black. the court for the first time last Tuesday, but dropped a pair of matches to region foe Coahulla Creek.

In the boys’ match, the Colts swept the Warriors, 5-0. Colt Souther defeated Daniel Kellman, 6-0, 6-0. Cam Souther beat Ayvin Christian, 6-3, 6-3, while Blake Arnold beat Aiden Murphy, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles action, the team of Jacob Tate and Sam Wilson defeated James Dandridge and Tommy King, 6-1, 6-1, while Parker Teasley and Brock Parham beat Malik and Trey Ware, 6-2, 6-2.

In the girls’ match, the Lady Colts picked up a 4-1 victory. Evy Mulkey defeated Grace Turner, 6-1, 6-3, and Alex Rowe beat Abbie Garner, 6-3, 6-4. The only victory for LFO came at No. 2 singles where Macey Gregg beat Kaitlain Ott, 6-4, 6-4.

The doubles matches also went the way of the visitors. Christian Gordon and Julianna Loller defeated Nhi Nguyen and Gracie Cochran, 6-0, 6-1, while Ivania Trevino and Destiney Beck beat Reaghan Howell and Zami- yah Ball, 6-0, 6-0.

The Ramblers improved to 2-0 on the season, while the LaFayette girls picked up their first win of the season as they both claimed 5-0 victories over visiting LFO on Friday.

In boys’ singles, Southern defeated Murphy, 8-0. Long picked up an 8-6 victory over Kellman and Massingill defeated Christian, 8-4.

In doubles, the team of Brown and Collins defeated Dandridge and King, 8-2. The Ramblers then completed the sweep as Parker and Lawrance took down Ware and Ware, 8-0.

In the girls’ match, LaFayette (1-1) got a singles win from Hobbs over Turner, 8-1. Hamilton beat Gregg, 8-1, while Fountain knocked off Garner, 8-3.

Doubles matches saw the team of Steadman and Kloe Ludy defeated Nguyen and Cochran, 8-1, before Lauren and Megan Torbett beat Howell and Ball, 8-0.

LFO’s teams both dropped to 0-2 on the season.
