Gordon Lee sweeps Bowdon, falls to Mt. Paran

- By Scott Herpst

The Gordon Lee Trojans extended their Region 6-A North winning streak with a sweep of Bowdon last week, but finally suffered their first subregion loss to Mt. Paran Christian to close out the week.

For the fifth time already this season, the Trojans were involved in a one-run game on Wednesday night. and for the third time in those five games, the Navyand-White found a way to win, but not before having to play nine innings in Carroll County.

Both teams pushed home solo runs in the third inning before the Trojans used the long ball in the top of the fourth. Threerun homers by J.D. Day and Jake Wright gave Gordon Lee a seemingly comfortable 7-1 advantage.

However, the Red Devils would use five hits and three walks to put up a six-spot of their own in the bottom of the sixth and the game would eventually go to extras.

After squandering a chance to go ahead in the eighth, leaving runners at second and third, the Trojans would finally push home a run in the ninth before slamming the door on the hosts in the bottom of the frame.

Day and Wright had two hits each, a total equaled by Wooden and Cobb. Gordon Lee used five pitchers with Hodson getting the victory in relief. Hodson threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and finishing with six strikeouts.

The Trojans closed out the week on Friday with a road trip to Kennesaw and returned home with a narrow loss to the Eagles.

Will Sizemore went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs in the loss. Wooden had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in two runs, while Hodson also had two hits.

Jake Poindexter got the start and went three innings, allowing two earned runs on two walks and seven hits. He struck out three batters. Streetman pitched 2.1 innings in relief and took the loss. He gave up just one earned run on two walks and four hits.

Gordon Lee (6-3, 5-1) was scheduled to face the Eagles on Monday, this time in Chickamauga, but results were not available as of press time.

The remainder of this week’s slate includes a game at Darlington on Wednesday, a home game with Darlington on Friday and a home doubleheader with Christian Heritage on Saturday.

The LFO Baseball Warriors suffered two region losses last week, but also got in the win column with a road victory in Adairsville.

The Warriors got six solid innings from junior starter Zach Coots last Tuesday, but the Redand-White could not find any offense to support him in a home loss to the Rebels in the Region 6-AAA opener for both teams.

The visiting Rebels scored solo runs in the second, third and fourth innings before tacking on two insurance runs off reliever Isaiah Blackburn in the top of the seventh.

Coots gave up just one earned run on four hits and three walks and finished with 10 strikeouts. Offensively, Coots, Josh McAfee, Carson McCammon and Will Carroll all had singles for LFO.
