LaFayette rebounds from loss to blank No. 1 Northwest

- By Scott Herpst

LaFayette’s Nicky Yancy would battle tooth-and-nail with Gordon Lee All-State hurler Emma Minghini this past Wednesday, but in the end, the Lady Trojans were able to pull out a 3-1 victory over their county rivals in Chickamauga.

Yancy allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings. She finished with one strikeout.

Down 1-0 going into the top of the fourth, LaFayette got a leadoff single from Railee Lynn and she moved to second base after a pair of groundouts. She would come all the way around to score on a Gordon Lee error.

The Lady Ramblers also left two runners on base in the top of the sixth, only to see Gordon Lee plate two additional runs later in the frame to secure the win.

Sam Adkins also had two hits for LaFayette.

Head coach Meagan Base called Madison Pettigrew’s performance back at home one night later “by far her most complete outing of the season” as the senior scattered just three hits, walked five batters and struck out nine in an five-inning, Region 6-AAAA victory over the Lady Bruins, who came into the game as the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A.

“Madison did a good job of throwing her off-speed for strikes (tonight) and she competed well with runners on base,” the coach added. “It was nice that our offense adjusted at the plate and continued to compete every inning to get Madison some insurance runs. That gave her the ability to relax and not press with runners on base.”

Pettigrew, along with Carlee Corbin, had two hits and one RBI, while Marquila Howell was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Lynn was 2-for-3, including a two-run homer as part of a six-run fourth inning. Yancy also had a two-run double in the same frame for LaFayette (7-4, 5-0).
