Sadie Lane to run and cheer at Missouri Valley College

Former Ringgold High School athlete Sadie Lane recently signed to continue her athletic career at Missouri Valley College.

Lane signed with Cleveland State Community College out of high school and has been a part of the athletic program there for the past two years.

She ran cross country for Cleveland State in 2018 and 2019 and is currently finishing up her cheerleadi­ng career for the college. She was named cheer captain for the 2019-20 season.

Lane earned NJCAA All-Academic American first team honors and a spot on the TCCAA All-Academic Achievemen­t Team for the 2018-19 year.

She will run cross country and cheer at Missouri Valley, a four-year institutio­n. She will be just one of 10 athletes on the MVC campus to compete in multiple sports.

Minghini named Player of the Week

Lafayette (Pa.) College sophomore catcher Dylan Minghini was named the Patriot League Player of the Week on Feb. 18 after his performanc­e in a three-game series against High Point (N.C.).

The former Gordon Lee Trojan AllState player batting .538 (7-for-13) with two homers and six RBI’s in the series to earn the first conference Player of the Week selection for his career.

Minghini was 3 for 5 in the Leopards’ season opener, finishing a triple short of the cycle and driving in five runs.

Cheer Spirit Elite to host clinic

A new local competitio­n cheerleadi­ng program, Cheer Spirit Elite, will hold its first clinic on Mar. 14 at the Rossville Athletic Center (301 Williams Street).

The clinic will be for ages 10-18, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at a cost of $15 per athlete. That cost also includes pizza, snacks and a hair bow. Athletes will learn motions, jumps, dances, cheers, chants and basic stunting and tumbling skills.

Athletes are asked to wear athletic shorts, a t-shirt or tank top, cheer or running shoes and have their hair pulled back in a ponytail.

Cheer Spirit Elite will compete in local competitio­ns, parades and other various events. The program is designed to give an opportunit­y for cheer athletes who are still learning the basics and are not yet at the skill level needed for school and all-star cheer teams.

HMS baseball instructio­nal camp

Heritage Middle School will hold a baseball instructio­nal camp on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the school’s baseball field.

The camp is open to all players, grades K through fifth grade. The cost is $25 each, which includes a camp Tshirt. In case of inclement weather, the camp will be held on Mar. 7.

Exploring Archery classes

The Catoosa County Parks and Recreation Department will hold two different archery classes on Thursdays, starting Mar. 5 at the Graysville gym.

The first class will be held from 3:45-4:45 p.m. and the second will be held from 5-6 p.m. The cost will be $30 per class. Fundamenta­l skills will be taught, developmen­tal games will be played and awards and t-shirts will be given out.

Trojan Run 5K

The annual Chick-fil-A Gordon Lee High School 5K Trojan Run/Walk will take place at Gordon Lee High School in Chickamaug­a on May 2.

Packet pick-up and race day registrati­on will be at 6:30 a.m. Race day registrati­on closes at 7:15 and the race will begin at 8.

Awards will be given to the top two male and female finishers. Medals will be given to the top two finishers (male and female) in each age group: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-65 and 66 and up. The awards ceremony will take place following the completion of the race at approximat­ely 9:15.

Parking will be available in the high school horseshoe and the elementary school horseshoe. Post-race snacks and drinks will be provided free of charge for the runners.

graduRUN 5K

Communitie­s In Schools of Catoosa County will hold its 22nd Annual “graduRUN” 5K on Mar. 21. The race will begin and end at First Volunteer Bank (5102 Alabama Highway) in Ringgold.

Registrati­on will begin at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the race. The 5K run will start at 8 a.m. and a 1-mile fun walk will begin at 8:05.

The race is course certified and will be worth points in the Chattanoog­a Track Club Runner of the Year standings. Medals and cash will be given to the top winners. A TV will be given away, as well as Disney tickets and other prizes.

Preseason tournament­s

The Trojan Baseball Invitation­al will be held in Chickamaug­a Mar. 13-15 with championsh­ip rings for the winners. Each team will be guaranteed three games and there will be no entry fee. The tournament will be for recreation teams only, ages 5-6 and 7-8.

The LFO Recreation Associatio­n will host preseason baseball and softball tournament­s next month.

The softball tournament will be held Mar. 20-22. Entry fee is $50 and all teams are guaranteed three games. All recreation teams, ages 6U-14U, are invited to participat­e.

Youth baseball clinic

The inaugural Tri-State Premier Baseball Clinic will be held June 17-18 for players, ages 8-12, at a cost of $100 per camper. The first session each day will run from 9 a.m.-12 noon, while the second session will run from 1-4 p.m.

All elements of the game, including fielding, throwing, hitting, baserunnin­g and the mental side of the game, will be addressed and all positions, including pitchers and catchers, will be covered. Campers will receive t-shirts and concession stand items will be available, but lunch will not be provided.

Camp instructor­s include many familiar names from the area with high school, college and even pro experience. Those names include Logan Peterson, Tyler Payne, Christian Burnett, Logan Baldwin, Jake Rogers and Coach Greg Payne.
