WCAAHAA sponsors poster contest for African American History Month

- From Beverly C. Foster

This year’s African American History Month Poster Contest sponsored by Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association Inc. (WCAAHAA) had student participants from Chattanooga Valley and La Fayette middle schools.

This year’s theme was, “How to Make Friends with Students of Different Cultures.” The students were very involved and overjoyed with the project. They designed beautiful artistic posters with thoughtful and inclusive wording.

Also, the teachers were energetic leaders. Ms. Susanne Bowling of Chattanooga Valley Middle School stated, “I just want to say you all (WCAAHAA) run a super art contest, and we are so thankful we were able to be a part of it.

“I have been teaching art for many years, and it was so nice to see students in each school to be chosen to win and place in the contest,” she said. “I wish there were more organizations like yours. It is so encouraging and inspiring to not only have awards, but also instill hope and inspiration for future events. The kids work hard and defeat is all around them, or they never hear the results, but this was very gratifying for all of the kids.

“It was so nice to met Ms. Jeanne Caldwell, Mrs. Kisha Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson and Rev. Clark,” she said. “Please tell them thanks for coming on a rainy day! Thank you for the books and for the beautiful calendars! The students love the bags and all the prizes.”

WCAAHAA thanks each school and student for their participation. It was a fun and educational project, and we look forward to next year.
