LFO drops pitchers’ duels in region

- By Scott Herpst

LFO senior hurler Haley Stahl gave a tremendous effort in the circle against defending Class AAA state champion Ringgold last Monday night, but the Lady Tigers were able to push across one run and parlay it into a 1-0 victory in the Region 6-AAA contest.

Stahl, a Bryan College commitment, gave up just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in six innings. She threw just 57 pitches, 39 for strikes.

Ringgold scored on an infield single in the bottom of the second and threatened to add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, putting two runners on with one out. But first baseman Auna Rolfe corralled a hard-hit line drive off the bat of Jade Gainer before throwing over to second for a double play to keep it a 1-0 game.

LFO would get a leadoff single by Britni Newbille in the top of the seventh, but a bunt attempt turned into a 5-6-3 double play by Ringgold and the home team was able to hold off its county rivals for the win.

Stahl and Julie Shore also had singles the Lady Warriors.

LFO 9, North Murray 1

The Lady Warriors scored in four of five innings at home last Tuesday and picked up five-inning run rule victory at home.

LFO had nine hits on the afternoon and took advantage of five North Murray errors. Stahl went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Britni Newbille was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Breonn Newbille had one hit and drove in two runs. Kloe Osborne had an RBI. Rolfe added a double and Heidi Johnson drew four walks and scored four times.

Stahl pitched the first four innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. Johnson pitched the fifth in relief.

Sonoraville 1, LFO 0

Stahl gave up just one walk and three hits with six strikeouts over seven innings on Thursday, but suffered her second hard-luck loss of the week as Taylor Long pitched the Lady Phoenix to a region win in Fort Oglethorpe.

Sonoraville scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning following a single and back-to-back errors by LFO.

Long saw her bid for a perfect game broken up on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, she would come back with a strikeout before snaring a line drive to end the game. She finished with 17 strikeouts and no walks in the no-hitter.

The Lady Warriors began the new week 5-4 overall and 3-2 in 6-AAA play.
