LaFayette closes out week on high note

The Sonoraville Lady Phoenix used one big swing in the first inning and rode the pitching of Taylor Long to a 4-1 Region 6-AAA victory over visiting LaFayette last Monday.

Kelly Green belted a twoout, three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to stake Sonoraville to a 3-0 lead and a Jacy Smith RBIsingle in the fourth would cap the scoring.

LaFayette left one runner on base in each of the first four innings before finally breaking through in the top of the sixth as Kayli Ballard scored on an error. However, Long would allow just one hit, a Carlee Corbin single, to go with four walks and 16 strikeouts to silence the Lady Ramblers’ bats.

Haynie Gilstrap pitched six solid innings for LaFayette, allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Ringgold 12, LaFayette 4

The Lady Ramblers led 3-1 after two innings last Tuesday, but gave up nine runs in the top of the third as the defending state champs ran away with the win.

Summer Burkett was 2 for 4 with three RBIs for LaFayette and Rylee Gamlen went 3 for 4. Gilstrap gave up 11 hits and four walks in seven innings. She finished with three strikeouts.

LaFayette 7, Adairsville 0

The Orange-and-Black pounded out a season-high 16 hits and gave up just two as they shut down the Lady Tigers in a 6-AAA game Thursday night in south Walker County.

LaFayette (3-6, 2-4) scored three runs in the bottom of the second on five straight two-out hits. Madi Ashley and Miccaylah Thompson both had doubles, while Haven Yancy, Jaselyn Couch and Railee Lynn all delivered RBI-singles.

Four more runs would cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, three on Corbin’s bases-loaded triple and one on an RBI by Gilstrap.

Gilstrap walked just one batter and struck out five in the complete-game victory. A total of 46 of the 61 pitches she threw went for strikes.

Couch, Corbin and Gilstrap all went 3 for 4, while Lynn, Ashley and Yancy all had two hits each.
