LaFayette baseball ends non-region slate in Rome

The LaFayette Ramblers picked up a non-region game at Rome on Friday night, but found the going tough against the Wolves in a 10-0, six-inning setback.

Skylar Cepeda had a double to account for LaFayette’s only hit of the night. Nick Radtke gave up four earned runs on four hits and a walk in two innings on the mound. Cepeda also pitched two innings. He gave up one earned run on two hits, while striking out two batters.

Blake Mann fanned two in one inning of relief, while Dylan Deering allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

LaFayette entered the new week at 6-4 overall and was slated to open Region 6-AAA play Tuesday at Coahulla Creek. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Oakwood Christian Eagles opened the 2021 baseball season at the Lakepoint Complex in Bartow County last Monday, but lost a 16-0 decision to Johnson’s Ferry Christian Academy of Marietta.

Caleb Epperson and Jarrett Chambers each had hits for the Eagles, while Epperson also recorded a stolen base.

OCA (0-1) was scheduled to face the Bradley Knights at home on Monday of this week. Due to newspaper deadlines, results were not available as of press time.

The Heritage Generals defeated Gordon Lee and Chattanoog­a Valley in a threeteam, six-hole match last Monday.

Heritage (159) got 38’s from Sawyer Eaton and Taylor Bunn, a 41 from Nathaniel Johnson and a 42 from Luke Fitzsimmon­s.

Gordon Lee was second with a 164 and Chattanoog­a Valley finished with a 168. Individual scores for the Trojans and Eagles were not available as of press time.

The Saddle Ridge Mustangs picked up another six-hole match win last Tuesday afternoon, besting both Dade and Lakeview.

Saddle Ridge had a final score of 159, thanks in part to Hayden Bowman, the day’s low medalist, who had a 36. Shane Johnston carded a 39, while Taylor Clarke and Lillie

Claire Mullaly each had a 42.

Walt Konrad shot a 40 for the Wolverines, followed by Mason Weathers with a 41, Keagan White with a 42 and Avery Flatt with a 43.

Lakeview’s 171 featured a 42 from Nolan Janvrin and a 43 from Chloe Qualls, while the Warriors had two more filler scores of 43 added to their team score.

Heritage earned its second victory of the week when they edged past LaFayette in another six-hole match on Thursday.

The Generals got a 37 from Peyton Hatfield, 38’s from Kyler Coulter and Mason Davis, and a 39 from Nicolas Anchondo to round out a team score of 152.

LaFayette (159) got a 38 from Ella Maples and a 39 from Shelby Hudson. Levin Stanton shot a 40 and Taylor Barfield finished with a 42.

All the matches were played at the LaFayette Golf Course.

University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a freshman Courtney Ball is the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Month for February, the league office announced last week. Ball, a native of Macon, Ga., starts at third base for head coach Frank Reed’s Mocs.

Ball recorded at least one hit in all seven games played to open her collegiate career in the month of February. She was 11 for 22 at the plate with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs. Slugging at a .773 clip, she also finished with a .500 on-base percentage.

Ball recorded a pair of three-hit games against Indiana State (Feb. 20) and Kennesaw State (Feb. 21), while driving in a combined five runs, posting two doubles and belting a home run during that stretch. She was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 22.
