LFO grabs first win for new coach

- By Scott Herpst sherpst@npco.com

The LFO Lady Warriors opened the Lauren Dyer era last Tuesday night by welcoming in the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in the first Region 6-AAA contest of the season for both teams.

But deadlocked at 5-5 after LaFayette rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning, the umpires determined that too much rain had fallen to finish the contest and play was then suspended.

The game will eventually be resumed from the point where it was suspended. However, there had not yet been a date set to get the game completed as of press time.

Before the suspension, the Lady Warriors had scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. Britni Newbille ripped a double and moved to third base on an error before scoring on a Heidi Johnson double. Johnson later raced home on a single by Breonn Newbille.

LaFayette put up two runs in the top of the sixth, but LFO plated its fourth run on an error in the bottom of the inning before Julie Shore scored on a Skyler Phillips double later in the frame to make it 5-2.

LFO 13, Coahulla Creek 1

The Red-and-White got the first victory for their new head coach this past Thursday as they traveled to Varnell and blasted the Lady Colts.

After scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, LFO broke open the Region 6-AAA game with five runs in the top of the third.

Tatyanna Long jump-started the rally with a leadoff triple, which was followed by an RBI-single off the bat of Britni Newbille. Following a walk by Carlee Wilson, Johnson laced a two-run double, Breonn Newbille added a single, and Lexi Downey capped the inning with an RBI off a groundout.

Six more runs were scored in the top of the fourth. Long had a leadoff double, followed up by another RBIsingle from Britni Newbille. After Wilson came through with a single, Johnson had an RBI-single and Breonn Newbille was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Downey drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run and two more runs came home, one on a wild pitch and one on a passed ball. Shore’s groundout brought in the 13th and final run of the game for the visitors.

The Lady Colts would end the shutout bid with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth, but Lakely Parrish would get the victory to move LFO to 1-0 in the region. She pitched all four innings, giving up just two hits and three walks. She struck out four batters and the run she allowed was unearned.

Chattooga 4, LFO 1

The Lady Warriors got a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut Chattooga’s lead down to 2-1, but gave up two runs in the top of the sixth inning and ultimately dropped the game to the Lady Indians during the Dalton Lady Cat Invitational at Heritage Point Park on Friday.

Down a pair of runs going into the bottom of the fifth, Breonn Newbille singled to lead off the inning and eventually came around on an RBI-single by freshman Mylee Howard.

However, it would be the only run of the game for the Red-and-White. Long also had single for the Lady Warriors.

Britni Newbille gave up two earned runs in five innings. She allowed four hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Johnson came on in relief in the sixth. She allowed two runs, though only one was earned. She did not allow a hit, but issued four walks.

LFO 6, Calhoun 3

The Lady Warriors would bounce back later Friday night to take down perennial state contender Calhoun.

The Lady Warriors (2-1 overall) trailed until the top of the fifth inning when they pushed five runs across the plate. They would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth the help secure the victory.

Britni Newbille had one hit and three RBIs in the win. Wilson and Johnson were each 2 for 4 with an RBI. Johnson collected two doubles, while Wilson had one. Long scored twice for the Lady Warriors. Phillips also picked up an RBI, while Breonn Newbille and Macy McGrew each had one hit.

Breanna Johnson got the start in the circle and gave up one earned run on three hits and a walk in just one inning. Parrish pitched the final five innings. She allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

Monday’s home game against Heritage has been postponed and results of Tuesday’s region game at Murray County were available as of press time.
