Four Mocs listed in early wrestling rankings
The Chattanooga Mocs’ wresting team has four individuals listed on InterMat.com’s NCAA DI Rankings. Fabian Gutierrez, Drew Nicholson, Matthew Waddell and Logan Andrew were all ranked among their weight classes.
Gutierrez comes in at No. 25 at 125 pounds. He made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships after earning an at-large bid for the second year in a row. The senior went 1-2 at the championships with his victory coming against Navy’s No. 25 Logan Treaster. Gutierrez held a 13-5 overall record last season including a 7-1 mark in Southern Conference competition.
Nicholson is No. 28 at 165. After being crowned the SoCon Tournament Champion at 165 pounds and the tournament MVP last season, Nicholson earned an automatic bid at the NCAA Championships. He defeated Penn State’s No. 23 Joe Lee (10-4) at the NCAA Tournament, going 14-7 overall in 2020-21.
Waddell is ranked No. 27 at 184 pounds. After earning his second consecutive automatic bid, Waddell made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Georgia native fell to the 8th and 24th-ranked wrestlers in the field. Waddell went 11-6 overall and placed second at the SoCon Tournament at 184.
Andrew closes out the four ranked Mocs with a No. 30 ranking at 197. He entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 32 seed after earning an at-large bid. He went 0-2 at the championships after finishing as the runner-up at the SoCon tournament. Andrew went 9-8 last season and was a member of the SoCon AllFreshman Team.
