Bremen wins appeal to join Region 6-AAA

- By Scott Herpst sherpst@npco.com

By a 15-3 vote, Bremen won its appeal before the GHSA this past Wednesday and will join Region 6-AAA starting next season, along with Adairsville, Coahulla Creek, LaFayette, LFO, Ridgeland and Ringgold.

Adairsville, Coahulla Creek, LaFayette, LFO and Ringgold will be the only holdovers from the current version of the region membership. Ridgeland is moving down from Class AAAA, Murray County, North Murray and Rockmart dropped to Region 7 of Class AA, and Sonoraville is moving up to take Ridgeland’s place in Region 7-AAAA.

Bremen was previously a member of Region 6-AAA for the 2016-18 reclassification cycle. They appealed to move laterally out of Region 5-AAA after being grouped with Carver-Atlanta, Cedar Grove, Douglass of Atlanta and Sandy Creek. Sandy Creek is a perennial top 10 power, while Cedar Grove defeated Carver last week for the Class AAA state title.

Of the seven schools that appealed for lateral transfers this past Wednesday (moving from one region to another, but in the same classification), private schools Landmark Christian and Hebron Christian were the only two that were denied. Bremen, Jefferson County, Montgomery County, Early County and Towns County were all approved, while Crisp County withdrew its appeal.

According to the minutes of the meeting, the Reclassification Committee then made sub-divisions in all regions with more than 10 schools (as required in the GHSA Constitution). However, regions, by a majority vote, may opt to change these sub-divisions and/or play a straight region schedule in any sport.

The new region alignments will go before the Executive Committee on Jan. 10, 2022 to be ratified for the next two-year cycle. A full list of the new regions and sub-region can be found at ghsa.net.
