Langford finishes eighth at state, LaFayette places sixth
The LaFayette Ramblers posted their best team score of the season in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA boys’ state tournament last Monday with a 312.
However, LaFayette dropped from a tie for third place into a final placement of sixth after a second-round 328 at the Bartram Trail Golf Club in Evans last Tuesday.
Grant Langford turned in the low round for LaFayette on Day 1 with a 1-under-par 71 that featured five birdies and an eagle 3 on the par5 13th hole. He went on to shoot a 74 in Round 2 to finish 1-over-par for the tournament. He was the highest finishing Rambler as he ended up in eighth place, individually.
Mason Thompson had three birdies and shot a 79 on Monday and followed with an 82 on Tuesday. Brady Mullaly finished with scores of 80 and 81 and joined Thompson in a tie for 29th place.
Freshman Shane Johnston enjoyed a career-low 82 in the opening round before a 98 on Tuesday, while Jackson Brewster (91-91) and Junior Barber (91-98) rounded out the lineup for the Ramblers.
Powerhouse Westminster posted scores of 67, 68, 69 and 70 on Tuesday to win the tournament going away. They finished the 36 holes in 19-under-par (557) after going 5-under-par in Round 1. Richmond Academy posted an excellent score of 3-under par (573) for the two-day event, while Cherokee Bluff (618) was 45 shots back of Richmond Academy in third place.
Richmond Academy’s Ballou Phillips, the leader in the clubhouse after Day 1 with a 6-under-par 66, added a 3-under 69 on Tuesday. He defeated Westminster’s Harris Barth (69-67) by one shot and Westminster’s Price Miller (69-68) by two.
