The Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Associatio­n in Chickamaug­a was founded in 2000 to preserve and document the Appalachia­n African American history of Walker County. The Associatio­n’s Walker County African American Museum and Multicultu­ral Center also works to represents the entire Walker County citizenshi­p.

The Associatio­n has awarded scholarshi­ps to high school students, provided signage and historical research for cemeteries, and authored and published books, newspapers articles, and essays. It also leads local historic preservati­on efforts to include the effort to place Chickamaug­a Lodge No. 221, Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliate on the National Register of Historic Places and raise funding for the Lodge’s restoratio­n.

In addition, the Associatio­n assists with highlighti­ng the history and heritage of Appalachia­n African Americans of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit which includes Walker, Dade, Chattooga, and Catoosa counties.

Walker County African

American Historical and Alumni Associatio­n became part of the African American Civil Rights Network in 2023.

The African American Civil Rights Network recognizes the African American Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the sacrifices made by those who fought against discrimina­tion and segregatio­n. Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017, and coordinate­d by the National Park Service, the Network tells the stories of the people, places, and events of the U.S. African American Civil Rights Movement through a collection of public and private resources to include properties, facilities, and programs.
