Course aimed at healthcare workers
LIMA – Responding to the reality of a society in which pressure- filled situations are common, Rhodes State College has created a course aimed at healthcare and other professionals who face verbal conflict. The training will help those who find themselves in high- pressure situations to foster positive, empathic, and effective communications between themselves and their clients, patients and family members.
The course will be facilitated by Dr. John Fallon, Professor of Humanities at Rhodes State who holds a doctorate in Rhetoric.
“There is an increasing need in our community, and in all local communities, of the ability to speak to each other with respect and dignity,” said Fallon. “This training will teach verbal protocols, which professionals can use to treat others with respect, thereby promoting a culture of tolerance and, hopefully, collaboration. The ability to speak to each other with dignity and respect can change lives and improve communities by making them safer and more tolerant.”
The highly interactive program will use scenariobased training to engage learners and be based on verbal defense principles of effective communication, intended to facilitate compliance, cooperation, and collaboration between people. Participants will be placed into small groups and situated in large spaces, which will optimize the learning environment as well as prioritize the safety of all participants.
According to the leaders, society has identified a need for increased awareness of personal biases so individuals can be less offensive to people from races, cultures, and communities different from our own. The course will be a benefit to communities by helping to increase self- awareness and appreciation of the differences in the ways we see the world and our place in it.
The training will take place in two, 3- hour sessions, held at Rhodes State College with the cost of $ 19 per person. Verbal Defense and Talking to Stressed- Out People will be held on Thursday, October 22, from 8: 30 – 11: 30 a. m. Implicit Bias Training and Emotional Wellness Training will be held on Thursday, October 29, from 8: 30 – 11: 30 a. m.
