100 YEARS AGO, OCTOBER 15, 1920

■ Through her brother, Harry G. Fisher, Miss Margaret Fisher, Los Angeles, California, sold the three- story business block at 5 East Auglaize Street as present occupied by the Fisher Hardware Co. and the Jr. OUAM., to Enos Wright, owner and proprietor of the Wright 5 & 10 cent store. Mr. Wright announced that the first floor will be leased to James Shockey, who will locate his Buick sales agency there about November 1.

75 YEARS AGO, OCTOBER 15, 1945

■ Raymond and Herbert Howard have been awarded the contract for hauling garbage in the city of Wapakoneta, thus ending a period of long debate as to what’s to be done about the garbage hauling problem. The Howards were awarded the contract by Service- Safety Director George Anderegg on their bid of 80 cents per month for residents. He will haul three times a week during June, July, August, and September, and once a week during the remaining months of the year. The Howards will obtain wagons to confirm to Ordinance 94, the city garbage ordinance, and their contract becomes effective when they are equipped. The Howards will charge business places $ 2 per month for garbage.

■ My! The mothers of many of the St. Joe students will certainly be kept busy this month, for their darling are celebratin­g their birthdays. First in line is Ruth Oen. This little girl celebrated October 1. She has been so busy during all these years that she hadn’t found time to grow. On October2, 1928 a visiting Angel deposited a small bundle on the Gerhlich doorstep. Could that have been Charlotte? October’s bright blue weather was made doubly bright for the Koenig family when Donald arrived on October 3, 1931. Helen Ann Greve and Marjorie Brockert were both “sweet sixteen” on October 6. Don’t you envy them girls? October 15 makes Robert Schneider’s 17th anniversar­y. We hope that we will live to do great deeds as Columbus did.

■ Even old timers are inclined to feel that the 1945 version of the Blume High football team is about as powerful as any that has ever represente­d the old school. Thus far they give evidence ay having about everything. There has been a marked resurgence of athletic prowess in Wapakoneta schools during the past several years after a period when they didn’t do so well. St. Joseph as well as Blume has had outstandin­g athletes and teams/

50 YEARS AGO, OCTOBER 15, 1970

■ Two Wapakoneta Senior High School students have been commended by the National Merit Scholarshi­p organizati­on for their high performanc­es in the national testing program. James Fischer, son of MM Lucas Fischer, 822 W. Auglaize Street, and Robert Stephenson, son of Dr. and Mrs. Marlin Stephenson, 109 Stinebaugh Drive, received letters of commendati­on for being among the top two percent of the thousands of students tested nationally.

25 YEARS AGO, OCTOBER 15, 1995

■ Jason Neumeier, MIS manager at the Telephone Service Company, conducted a seminar Wednesday on Brightnet/ Internet during the teacher inservice for educators in the Wapakoneta City School System. Neumeier discussed the set up of internet and the possibilit­ies of using the system in the classroom. Deb Baumann, managing editor of the Wapakoneta Daily News, gave tours to teachers in the Wapakoneta City School System as part of WOEA Day. She discussed the changing role computers are playing in the newspaper business.
