Tigers hoops squads suffer narrow defeats

The Waynesfiel­dGoshen basketball teams each lost at home by narrow margins to open play this week.

The boys lost to New Knoxville 67- 58 in overtime on Tuesday, while the Lady Tigers were edged 49- 46 by Indian Lake on Monday.

Both squads are 0- 3 on the season to date, with each having one league loss.

In the boys contest, Layton Campbell had 17 points, as did ZaMere Daniel. Hyatt Kaufman and Jayden Elliott each scored 11 points.

Leading scorers for New Knoxville were Patrick Covert and Carson Bierlein with 16 apiece, and Max Henschen with 15.

In the first period, the Tigers took an eight- point lead, 18- 10. Campbell had nine points and Daniel scored six, with Elliott contributi­ng a threepoint­er. The Rangers closed the gap slighting in the second, outscoring W- G by two points. At the break, Waynesfiel­dGoshen led 31- 25. Campbell and Kaufman had four points each, Daniel had three, and Blake Barnes hit a basket as well.

The third saw New Knoxville surge to a a 41- 39 lead, as they outpaced W- G by eight. Daniel made two shots, with Campbell and Kaufman making one apiece.

Things stayed close in the fourth, with W- G scoring 11 points to the Rangers’ nine, leaving matters even at 50 when regulation ended. Kaufman made two shots and a free throw. Daniel, Campbell and Elliott made one basket each.

The Rangers then controlled matters in overtime, putting up 17 points to W- G’s eight. Elliott had one basket and four free throws. Daniel had the other two points.

Waynesfiel­d- Goshen will host Temple Christian on Friday night.

In the girls contest on Monday, Indian Lake got the threepoint victory. Jordan Elliott provided the bulk of the offense with 27 points, including 13- of- 14 at the free throw line. Kapri Wilson had five points.

The Lady Lakers had a one- point edge in the first, 10- 9. Elliott hit three baskets while Wilson made a 3- pointer.

The second frame was a mirror image, with W- G having the one- point advantage, tying the game at 19 at intermissi­on. Zaria Deleon, Peyton Spencer, and Wilson had baskets for W- G. Elliott made three free throws, and Rylie Barrington had one.

The third is where Indian Lake retook the lead, with a threepoint margin. Elliott hit two show from deep and two free throws. Spencer head a two and Maddie Flinn connected on a three.

Each team scored 14 points in the final period, with Indian Lake thus maintainin­g its margin. Deleon made one basket and Barrington hit two free throws. Elliott scored 10 points, almost all on free throws.

Waynesfiel­d- Goshen is back in action on Saturday when they will visit Botkins. JV play starts at noon.
