WHS French Club steps up to help out

Every little bit gesture of goodwill counts, no matter the size.

That is especially true this year when unforeseen circumstances - including a divided election, impeachment of a sitting president, a global pandemic and record levels of unemployment - coalesced into the unpredictable mess that was 2020.

But amid the chaos were some good stories, such as Stump, the Golden Labrador who, by donating blood, has saved more than

100 canine live since he was one.

Another positive, local story is the one of Lisa Romer, a teacher at Wapakoneta High School and advisor to the French Club. She wants her students to give back to the community that supports their school.

This year, like every year, her club partnered with First United Methodist in providing toys and clothing for needy families in the community.

So from after the Thanksgiving break until a final donation on Dec. 7, she and her roughly 45 students have been working with Auglaize County Jobs and Family Services to buy items for children in the area, which were then delivered to First United Methodist Church.

How did the process work?

"The French Club members

shopped on their own and each brought in their donations of baby clothes and toys," Romer said via email.

Not doing something, even during a pandemic, was never a thought.

"[ Due to the size of the club], we can collect a large quantity of [ items] to help support them," Romer added. "I think this year it is especially important to give back to area families who may have been hit hard by the Coronavirus."

And unlike some people, it appears the members of her club don't mind shopping.

"Our French Club enjoys buying toys and clothes for area children in our community," Romer said.

By doing this, Romer believes her club is proving that by working together people can help others no matter the circumstances.
