ACHS offering program on Shawnees
The Auglaize County Historical Society will host “The Shawnee: Past And Present “with Jeremy Turner on Tuesday, January 5, at 7 p. m., on the Historical Society Facebook page. The program is free and open to the public.
This presentation will cover the history of the Shawnee people from the Fort Ancient people to the forced removal of the Shawnee out of Ohio to the west of the Mississippi River. Attendees will learn about the movements of the
Shawnee Communities in Ohio because of attacks and encroachment, as well as the forced removal of the Shawnee into Missouri, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. The presentation will conclude with a look at the three separate Shawnee communities today and what they are doing to keep Shawnee culture alive and vibrant.
To access the event, simply go to the Auglaize County Historical Society's Facebook page ( also accessible via https://www.facebook.com/Auglaizecountyhistory) a little before 7 p. m. on Jan. 5. The program will appear as the most current post on the page. Make sure you adjust your volume ( on the screen), if needed.
Presenter Turner is an enrolled citizen of the Shawnee Tribe and a descendant of the Wyandotte and Seneca-Cayuga Nations. He has been actively researching the material culture and social organization of the historical Ohio Country tribes for the past 25 years. Turner is an active participant in all three of his communities' Ceremonial
Grounds, now located in Oklahoma. He and his family are active in providing historical presentations and living history programs to various historical sites, museums, and institutions across the traditional homelands of his communities. He enjoys spending the little free time he has hunting, trapping, fishing and growing traditional varieties of corn, beans, squashes, and tobacco in his gardens.
Founded in 1963, the Auglaize County Historical Society collects, preserves, interprets, and shares the history of Auglaize County, enriching lives by connecting people and communities to the past and to each other.
