Redskins 200 free relay team takes second at state

CANTON — The contingent from Wapakoneta competed in the Division II state swim meet on Thursday afternoon at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

All events were finals, with no preliminar­ies held due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Redskins 200 freestyle relay team of Cameron Reichenbac­h, Alex Honigford, Luke Wierwille and Nate Metzger took second place with a time of 1:28.59. Kenton Ridge won the state title in 1:27.43.

The Redskins were sixth in the 400 free relay, with the same group as the 200 free. Their time was 3:15.98, while the team from Hawken was first (3:10.32).

In the 200 medley relay, Reichenbac­h, Grant Honigford, Gavin Sutton and Owen Becker finished 14th with a time of 1:40.36. First place went to Lexington (1:34.66).

In the individual races, Alex Honigford earned a fourth-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle. He had a time of 21.49 seconds. Matt Brunsky of Vandalia Butler finished first with a time of 20.94.

Reichenbac­h finished 22nd with a time of 22.46 seconds.

In the 100 yard freestyle, Honigford placed 10th with a time of 47.63. Also in the event was Metzger, who finished 22nd (48.93). Brady Mcinerney of St. Francis desales won the state title with a time of 45.96.

Metzger had also qualified for the 200 freestyle. He finished 20th in that event with a time of 1:47.96. Lucas Lane of Dover had a winning time of 1:39.66.

In the team standings, Hawken finished first with 228 points. Indian Hill was second (145). The Redskins finished with 88 points to claim eighth place.
