▪ A Community Reading and Recreation Associatio­n has been organized under the auspices of the M.E. church. Donations in the way of standard books, and magazines, comfortabl­e chairs, reading lamps, small rugs—anything in fact to make a room homelike and attractive will be greatly appreciate­d. ▪ Dodge Brothers Motor Cars will be sold in this city by Roy C. Haman, Proprietor, Dixie Highway Garage, Wapakoneta, Ohio

▪ In order to give exact direction as to its location, R.C. Haman of the Dixie Highway Garage caused a handsome and elaborate sigh post installed on Auglaize Street in front of the Ruppert grocery. The garage, in its location on Broadway street, is somewhat removed from the main arteries of travel, but with the installati­on of the signpost, the difficulti­es of finding it have been lessened.

75 YEARS AGO, FEBRUARY 27, 1946

▪ In a wide-open basketball game played in the Blume gymnasium Friday night, the Wapakoneta team defeated a strong Sidney team by the top-heavy score of 72 to 47. The game was one of the most exciting of the season and was marked by high scoring by both teams and an unusually large number of fouls. Cozad set a record for the season with a total of 28 points, while Urich did very well with 17. Schaub and Miller also played outstandin­gly well. This is the last appearance in the Blume gym of seniors Urich, Schnell, Cozad, Dan Miller, and Marker. The Blume Reserves had an easy victory over the Sidney seconds as is shown by the score of 38 to 21. Dan Mckeever was high point man with 12 points.

▪ It is doubtful is there is another place on Route 25 from Toledo to Cincinnati that is worse for drivers than the route through Wapakoneta, with special emphasis on the Willipie-auglaize corner. The fixed idea of some of our businessme­n that they get business as a result of routing those enormous trucks and trailers around this congested corner is going to sooner or later result in radical changes in the route, which they will like still less than those that have been thus far suggested.

▪ MM Henry Hormann, West Pearl Street, received word from their son, Staff Sergeant Harold Hormann, informing them of this safe arrival in the States. After 15 months European service, Ssgt. Hormann is now in Indiantown Gap awaiting his Army discharge. His parents expect him home some time the latter part of this week.

50 YEARS AGO, FEBRUARY 27, 1971

▪ Lamb quadruples have been raised by Denny Leiber on the Ned Place farm on Conant Road northwest of Buckland. The quads were born from a three-way crossbreed (Suffolk, Hampshire, Columbia) Black-faced ewe last Thursday and have been doing find hand-fed by bottle. Statistics show quads occur less than 10 times per 10,000 lambs born. But only a few sets survive birth.

▪ Just Ask—action Line—is it proper for a man to wear dressy bell bottom slacks to a formal wedding as a guest? JWR, Wapakoneta—jeanne Zofkie of Zofkie’s Bridal Department advises bell bottom are quite proper at a formal wedding as long as they are worn either as part of a suit or with a sport coat. Miss Zofkie notes even some formal wear with bell bottoms is now on the market.

25 YEARS AGO, FEBRUARY 27, 1996

▪ When the two of you have a flair for hair styling and you’re best friends besides, operating a unisex salon can be a dream. Ask Leann Whetstone, owner of the Pizzazz Hair Studio, her new business venture located at 15 Willipie Street. When the stylist left a St. Marys hair center after seven years to open her own place, she brought along co-worker Jill Braun. Business has been good since the studio’s grand opening and Whetstone is glad to see much her clientele from St. Marys coming the extra distance for her services.
