NORWALK — It was a good start for the district wrestling tournament for two St. Marys grapplers, while the three Wapakoneta entrants struggled on this first day of competition.

The Hisey brothers are both through to the championship semifinals, that will take place on Saturday morning at 9:30.

Tyler Hisey won the 106 pound division at the Defiance Sectional last week, and the junior defeated Jayden Depinet of Columbian by a pin in 39 seconds, then collected another pin against Colyn Limbert of Buckeye at the 1:21 mark of their match.

His twin brother Trevor, wrestling at 113 pounds, also won his first two matches to advance to the championship semifinals. He pinned Kaleb

Ruhl of Norwalk (1:36), then went the distance against Frank Depinet II, who won the Clyde sectional, winning by a 9-2 count.

Wapakoneta’s Colin Mellott, who was the 113-pound champion of the Defiance sectional, won his first contest, a pin at 1:29 against Braylen Williams of Huron. But Robbie Sagaris of Aurora was able to squeak out a 6-4 win against the Redskin to knock him to the consolation bracket with only his second loss of the season. His next match was against Kaleb Ruhl of Norwalk, and the Redskin senior dominated with a 17-1 technical fall.

The Sagaris family was not kind to Wapakoneta on Thursday night, as Robbie’s

brother Antwan defeated the Redskins’ Bryce Knapke (120 pounds)by a 15-0 technical fall in round one of the championship bracket, but the senior kept his season alive with a pin over Kreston Shaw of Vermillion at 4:27. He caught a tough break in round two. He had to take on Dierre Clayton of Akron, who had won the Beachwood sectional, but was upset in the championship bracket and Knapke was eliminated from the tournament by a pin in 33 seconds.

Wapakoneta’s third wrestler of the night was Gavin Hall at 132 pounds. The junior lost a tough 5-1 decision to Shareef Williams of Benedictine, then was pinned by Garrett Montgomery of Shelby to drop out of the tournament.

Elida’s Connor Douglas (138) was able to win his first two matches on Thursday at 3:31 and a 13-1 major decision so he will wrestle in Saturday’s championship semis.

Treven Rittenhouse of Defiance won two of his first three matches (W - 3:40/ L :55/ W - 3:40), as did Derrick Slater of Celina (W - 1:20/ L - TF 181/ W - 4-1), so both are still in the hunt for a possible fourth place finish and a trip to the state tournament.

Western Buckeye League wrestlers that competed but lost both of their matches were, Killian Sudduth (126) of Van Wert, Kyler Bowlby (138) of Celina, Ethan Scurlock (145) of Shawnee, and Owen Thomas (145) of Ottawa-glandorf.

Tournament action continues today with weight classes 152 to 285 beginning at 5 p.m.

The Redskins will send out Jacob Schlesselman (160), Ean Kramer (195), Trevor Houts (220), and Cael Rostorfer (285).

The St. Marys lineup will include, Mason Saeler (160), Jace Schaefer (170), Defiance sectional champion Stashu Patterson (182), and Carter Sharpe (195).

The Division II state tournament will be held at Marengo Highland on March 13-14.
