Marker ceremony scheduled

The Auglaize County Historical Society announces that a brief ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, on West Auglaize Street just east of Blackhoof Street, (on the north side) to dedicate a marker for the Wapakoneta Commercial Historic District. Those attending the outdoor event are requested to observe public health protocols.

The Auglaize County Historical Society successfully applied for funding from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to provide a permanent plaque honoring the downtown's inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

Although the Wapakoneta Commercial

Historic District has been included in the National Register for more than 30 years, no sign has ever indicated this status. The new marker was produced by Sewah Studies, Marietta, Ohio, the company that also casts the Ohio Historical Markers.

States Historical Society administrator Rachel Barber, "The buildings of downtown Wapakoneta represent the economic, industrial, cultural, and social history of the community. They also exemplify most popular American architectural styles from the late 19th century through mid-20th century. They form the only National Register-listed district in Auglaize County, and the Historical Society is pleased to help the community honor this irreplaceable historic resource."

Pomeroy Foundation is a private institution based in Syracuse, New York. is committed to supporting the celebration and preservation of community history The Pomeroy Foundation provides grants to obtain signage in the form of roadside markers and plaques. Since 2006, the organization has funded more than 1,200 signs across the United States, all the way to Alaska. The Pomeroy Foundation has grown to offer eight different marker programs.
