Lady ‘Skins get first win of season

- By MIKE FRANK

It’s a good note before a long trip.

The Wapakoneta softball team earned its first win of the season on Monday, defeating Spencerville 12-2 in five innings.

Wapakoneta (1-1) will now head south for several days, as they travel to Florida for a series of games against some highly rated competition in the Sunshine State later this week.

On Tuesday, Rylie Jeanneret got the win. She allowed two runs on five hits and two walks, pitching all five innings. She had six strikeouts for the day.

Wapakoneta collected a total of 13 hits, with a number of players picking up RBIS.

Kaylei Barnett had a triple, while Jeanneret and Katie Lisi each had a double and single.

Allie Wilson and

Corrin Wilder had two hits each.

Lisi drove in three runs, while Wilder, Carlie Schroeder and Jeanneret had two RBIS apiece. Wilson, Taylor West, and Aryka Watt brought in

one each.

After holding Spencerville scoreless in their first at-bat, Wilson reached on an error. Wilder singled to

right, with Wilson going to third.

A groundout by Schroeder still had a positive effect as Wilson scored and Wilder

moved up a base.

West then laid down a bunt which allowed Wilder to cross with the Redskins’ second run.

In their next at-bat, Wapakoneta’s first two hitters were retired. But that’s when things got going. Barnett sent a ball into center, and raced all the way to third. After Maddi Doseck walked, Wilson singled to left, scoring Barnett.

After the runners moved up on a passed ball, a single to center by Wilder drove them both across to make it 5-0.

Schroeder hit a pop fly to first but it eluded the fielder’s glove, and Wilder crossed the plate.

West singled into shallow right. Lisi then belted one to center, and both runners touched the plate, raising the lead to 8-0.

The Redskins would load the bases on a single and walk, but a fielder’s choice ended the inning.

Spencerville broke up the shutout bid with two doubles and a walk in the top of the third, and scoring one run in the process.

Doseck began the home third with a walk. After a popout to third by Wilson, Shaylin Cook singled past the third baseman. After another pop-up, Watt singled to center, scoring

Doseck.

Lisi then singled to left and Cook came across to make it a 10-1 margin.

Jeanneret helped her own cause with a double into left field, scoring Watt and Lisi and the hosts now were up 12-1.

A walk and infield single put two Bearcats on in the top of the fourth. The next batter hit a ball that sailed up and she was called out due to the infield fly. The runner on second was tagged out trying to advance on the play as well. A single then scored a run, but they were still down 12-2.

Wapakoneta got a single by Wilson in the fourth but would not score in that frame.

Jeanneret allowed a single to center to start the fifth. She then got two batters swinging and missing at strike three. Things came to a close as the next batter grounded to third with the throw relayed across the field in time for the final out.

Coach Bill Sammons of Wapakoneta noted the team is still working on a number of facets of their game. “I’m proud of the attitude of this team,” he said.

He added that the trip to Florida will serve as a bonding experience for the team and will allow them to continue to experiment with various lineups and positions.

Wapakoneta will face four teams, playing two games on Thursday, one on Friday and one on Saturday afternoon before returning home on Tuesday.

Their next game after that will be April 9 at Ottawa-glandorf, which will also be the first Western Buckeye League contest of the season.
