Redskins rout St. John’s

- From staff reports

DELPHOS — The Wapakoneta baseball team defeated St. John’s 13-3 in five innings in a nonleague game on Monday afternoon.

It is the first victory of the season for the Redskins.

Brandon Schneider got the win for the Redskins. He pitched two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. Ryan Camper pitched the other three, giving up one run.

Schneider struck out four and Camper got five Ks.

Braeden Goulet had a home run, while Grant Bauer, Austin West and Garrett Siefring each had doubles.

Goulet wasted no time in getting things started, hitting a home run on the first pitch he saw from the Blue Jays pitcher.

Siefring then doubled to center, and Cooper Talowsky and Trevor Crow both walked. Another base on balls, this one to West, forced in a run.

Schneider then put a ball in play to left field. It was caught, but allowed Talowsky to score the third run. St. John’s then got two outs to prevent further damage.

St. John’s got a double in their first at-bat, but nothing else as Schneider retired the other three hitters on strikes.

Goulet got a one-out walk in the second, then stole second, and went to third on a dropped third strike. An error on a grounder by Talowsky allowed Goulet to come home and make it 4-0.

After Crow singled, a double to right by West drove both baserunners across.

Schneider walked, with he and West scoring on a two-base hit by Bauer making it 8-0.

After a pitching change, a flyout closed out the inning.

St. John’s had multiple baserunners in the bottom of the second, but was not able to cash in on the opportunities.

A walk to Landon Brandt started the third, and Goulet then drove a ball to right, bringing Brandt all the way around for a 9-0 cushion.

Goulet advanced to third on an error by the DSJ second baseman, and scored on a wild pitch for the 10th run of the day.

St. John’s broke up hopes of a shutout with back to back home runs leading off the bottom of the third.

The Redskins pulled Schneider at that point. Camper came on and walked three batters to load the bases.

Talowsky picked the runner at first off, and the Redskins then got another out at home when the runner tried to score from third. A strikeout by Camper then ended the inning with the Redskins now up 10-2.

The fourth inning was scoreless on both ends.

In the fifth, Mauch and Siefring both reached due to errors by the Blue Jays infield. Talowsky was then hit by a pitch, filling the bases.

After getting one out, St. John’s walked West and Reser, both of which forced in runners from third.

Later, Talowsky would score on a wild pitch to make the lead 13-2.

St. John’s came up in the fifth. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out.

A fielder’s choice resulted in an out at third, with the Redskins conceding a run.

Camper then finished off the victory by getting the next batter looking at strike three.

Wapakoneta (1-1) will travel to Ben Logan today.
