Bunny Trail and Story Walk keep St. Marys hopping

ST. MARYS -- For anyone who decided to visit downtown St. Marys April 3rd, most would say that the Bunny Trail and the Story Walk were a big success for the the St. Marys Area Resource Team (SMART) and the St. Marys Community Public Library (SMCPL).

The Easter celebration went off without a hitch, clear skies and cool weather allowed the festivities to prosper. Kids went around with their buckets and bags, going from businesses as they followed a trail set out by the two groups.

The Bunny Trail gained a lot of traction with people, as parents and their children were happy to take any sweets presented by all the participating businesses, and even get the rare temporary tattoo or trinket for their patronage. People also took lots of pictures with local mascots that decided to move around the area. Easter bunnies were also abound, letting kids take pictures with them at any opportunity.

While the location was focused on Spring Street, people walked all over the downtown area, something which SMART had hoped would happen. The intention of the event was to help generate interest in the area, all while providing a safe activity for people to have fun in and bring the community together. The event had to be simplified, not only for the ease of everyone that wanted to take part in the festivities, but to address COVID guidelines.

The SMCPL’S Story Walk also went well with people walking in the area, generating some interest as people connected the pieces of the story together. Seventeen businesses participated, with people who read the story being presented a question in order to be drawn into a raffle that finished on the same day.

While the festivities involving the Bunny Trail are being put away, the Story Walk is being kept up until the end of April or the middle of May. Depending on the interest that was generated during the event, two more Story Walk’s are being considered for June and in winter. The SMCPL says the one in June will go along with the summer reading them “One hundred years of Tails and Tales,” in connection to their 100 anniversary occurring that month.
