Redskins edged by St. Henry

- From staff reports

A battle of Redskins went in the visitors’ favor on Saturday, as St. Henry edged Wapakoneta 2-1 in a nonleague contest at Mercyhealth Field.

St. Henry scored a pair in the first. Wapakoneta was able to get one in the fifth, but couldn’t add to its total after that.

Ryan Camper pitched four innings for Wapakoneta, allowing six hits. He walked one and struck out one. Brandon Schneider pitched the other three innings, giving up two hits and walking two. He recorded four strikeouts.

The winning pitcher was Ryan Uhlenhake, who threw five innings for St. Henry. He allowed eight hits and walked three, while striking out eight. Nolan Schmitz threw two innings with three strikeouts.

Cooper Talowsky had three hits on the day, including a double for Wapakoneta.. Garrett Siefring, Trevor Crow, Austin West, Grant Bauer and Landon Brandt all had one hit each. West drove in the run.

St. Henry led off the game with a single. After a pop out, a triple by Uhlenhake got them on the board. Uhlenhake then scored on an infield error. A strikeout and groundout closed out the inning.

A walk to Braeden Goulet, plus hits by Talowsky and Crow, loaded the bases for Wapakoneta with one out. But two strikeouts shut the door on the early scoring chance.

In the Wapakoneta third, Garrett Siefring walked and Talowsky singled with one away. A strikeout and liner that was caught by Uhlenhake kept the shutout intact.

Garrett Siefring led off the Redskins fifth with a single to right. He was then thrown out trying to steal second.

Talowsky then doubled to right, meaning they missed out on a potential run. Logan Crow was put in as a courtesy runner for Talowsky, the Redskins’ catcher. Crow then scored on a single to right by West. Caleb Reser got aboard after being hit by a pitch, but Bauer struck out to end the inning.

Wapakoneta went in order in the sixth. In the seventh, St. Henry retired the first two hitters. Crow was plunked to keep things alive, but West then was struck out to end the contest.

Wapakoneta (1-3) will host Minster today at 5 p.m. in a nonleague contest.
