Tigers unable to solve SM’S Mcglothen

The cold never bothered her anyway.

Karsyn Mcglothen tossed a no-hitter for St. Marys, as the Lady Roughriders defeated visiting Waynesfield-Goshen 17-0 in a non league contest at K.C. Geiger Park on Thursday.

Mcglothen struck out nine in the chilly and windy conditions. She had just one hitter reach base, due to an error in the fourth inning.

St. Marys brought plenty of heat on offense, with 20 hits total. Emma Birt, Renee Sweigart and Zoe Lininger each had three hits. Mcglothen helped her own cause with a double and single.

Kapri Wilson took the loss for Waynesfield-goshen. She walked one and struck out one. Peyton Spencer was the sole W-G baserunner.

Coach Kendra Solomon of St. Marys praised Mcglothen’s achievement. “She worked hard, stayed focused and did what was needed,” she said.

The win also was the first one of the week for the Lady Riders after falling to Fort Recovery and Wapakoneta.

Mcglothen got two strikeouts and then fielded a grounder for the third out in the first.

Kiley Tennant bunted a single and stole second, then scored on a double by Birt which reached the corner in left field. W-G was able to get two outs before a single up the middle by Lininger scored Birt to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, St. Marys would bat around and score five runs. Kelsey Poppe singled to the left side and Morgan Hirschfeld then bunted and beat the throw to first. Poppe went to third, then Hirschfeld advanced on a steal. Poppe would then score on an W-G error, and Hirschfeld came in on a groundout.

Birt doubled and Sweigart singled, both driving the ball to left, and both resulting in runs for the Riders. Kyrsten Fowler was put in to run for catcher Sweigart. She went to second on a passed ball, third on a groundout, then scored on a bloop single by Lininger making it a seven-run lead.

After two strikeouts and a come backer by Mcglothen, Poppe led off for the second straight inning. This time she reached on an error. Hirschfeld got aboard on a fielder’s choice.

Lily Steinberg singled down the thirdbase line, then she and Hirschfeld went to second and third, respectively while the ball was being relayed.

Tennant sent a ball that bounced off an infielder’s glove, with

Hirschfeld crossing the plate. A wild pitch moved Tennant to second.

On another pitch that got past the catcher (which was ball four to Birt), Steinberg tried to score but was tagged out by Wilson covering the plate.

A hit to left by Sweigart scored two runs, and Mcglothen drove in the 11th run (with Fowler again as a runner). Liniger got a hit to the right side, which brought home Abby Williams (running for Mcglothen).

Spencer led off the Tigers fourth. Her grounder snuck under the glove of an infielder, giving her squad a baserunner. Mcglothen got two groundouts (with Spencer advancing to third), then a strikeout looking to keep the no-no intact.

Elly Wedding beat out an infield single and Poppe walked in the Riders fourth. Two batters later, a single to the gap in left-center scored them both. Stenberg moved to third on a hit by Tennant.

Tennant then stole second. When the throw went out, Steinberg tried to cross on a delayed steal but the throw back was in time.

Birt then singled with Tennant scoring. Sweigart singled, and both advanced on a passed ball.

Mcglothen then showed her ability at the plate with a double to left-center, scoring the final two runs of the day.

She then returned to the circle for the fifth. The leadoff batter was retired on a grounder to first. Mcglothen then got Taryn Fraley swinging and Cece Werner looking at strike three to finish off the contest.

St. Marys (1-2 WBL, 6-4 overall) will travel to Ottawa-glandorf today. Waynesfieldgoshen (1-0 NWCC, 4-5 overall) will be off until Monday when they visit Elgin.
