100 YEARS AGO, MAY 14, 1921

■ Buckland vs. Wapakoneta Reds at Buckland, Ohio, May 15, 1921. Game Called @;30 p.m.

■ The Junior Reds will hook up with the W.C.I. Bearcats on the local diamond next Saturday. An interestin­g game is expected to ensure as both teams are keen rivals. The Juniors have found their biggest stunt is base stealing. Last Sunday in the Cridersvil­le game they were able to pilfer 25 sacks. The Bearcats have found trouble in starting, but expect to loosen up on the Juniors Sunday.

■ Master Charle Brown, son of MM A.J. Brown, Main Street, has filed his applicatio­n to attend the national boys’ summer training camp at Muskegon, Michigan, this summer. Master Charles is a student at St. Joseph’s parochial school. The number of boys who will attend the camp from here has now been increased to eight.

■ Walter Lyman, who has been automobili­ng around this section of the state in a Ford truck for several months because of damages done to his Overland sedan, was called to the factory at Toledo. He expects to bring the machine back with him. A number of his friends recommende­d to him that he take the back road coming home this time. He was returning from the factory when the machine was damaged the last time.

75 YEARS AGO, MAY 14, 1946

■ The Circus has come to town and left, having played one performanc­e last evening to a capacity audience, 2/3 of which was composed of youngsters. The Bernard Bros. Circus presented a bill of trained dogs, cowboys and cowgirls with plain and fancy riding. A fire eater, snake charmer. Monkeys and a real honest to goodness lion. Together with various other circus attraction­s they played to an enthusiast­ic audience. The lion was reported to have fled his cage in the side show tent sometime yesterday morning, but was re-captured before he could escape the confines of the tent. The circus, which traveled here from Bellefonta­ine, left after last night’s performanc­e for Delphos, where it will play a one-night stand this evening.

■ The Buckland Alumni Dance will be held May 17 at the Buckland High School auditorium. A short program will precede round and square dancing to the music of a local orchestra. Three pairs of nylons will be awarded as door prizes sometime during the evening. The doors will open at 8:30 with a fifty cent admission to everyone. The public is invited.

■ Born this morning to MM Charles Stevenson, Jr., of Route 4, Wapakoneta, twins. The twins, a boy and a girl, arrived at Lima Memorial hospital. The Stevensons now have two daughters and the twins.

■ NOTICE—NO trespassin­g on the Second Ward School grounds during demolition of the building. Anyone caught trespassin­g will be prosecuted. No Sunday sales.

■ Science students from Northridge Elementary School were honored recently when their themes were selected to be read on Arbor Day. They include: Soctt Zwiebel, Peter Frame, David Amos, Toni Rickard, Linda Wagner, Jim Hayzlett, Dawn Laffin, Diane Jurosic, and Linda Keiber.

■ The fame of the Freyburg herons is gradually spreading. A reporter and photograph­er from the Springfiel­d Sun visited the Lunz farm and were given the tour by official spotter Norma Lunz. The photograph­er shot the nesting birds from a distance. The picture-story will be in Sunday’s edition, he said,

25 YEARS AGO, MAY 14, 1996

■ Wapakoneta Sister Cities, Inc, will sponsor a Las Vegas Night on Saturday at the Wapakoneta Elks Lodge. Activities will run from 7 to 11 p.m. Games of chance will be offered and an auction will be held. Also to be given away is a gift certificat­e from Apollo Travel. Process will help defray costs of various activities planned by the organizati­on during a visit this summer by residents of Lengerich, Germany.
