Roots and Shoots ready for the fair

-

Roots and Shoots Garden Club members and a guest made the trip on July 13 to the home of Sandy Kennedy for a tour of the family farm that has been turned in wetlands.

Sandy used a wagon to take two groups at different times. There are five different ponds, and each have a purpose of filtering water. She

stopped at each pond to give everyone a chance to check them out. Several members were able to chase some of the frogs so everyone could see them jump in the ponds across the algae. One of the ponds is almost full of cattails and in another the water lilies are starting to

bloom. One of the groups was caught in the rain and came back a little wet.

Following the tour, President Phil Valentine brought the meeting to order. Members learned:

* The club is getting ready for the county fair this year. Everyone is to

bring as many plants as they can to fill the booth with bright colors.

* The Fall Plant Sale will be held Oct. 2 at Veterans Park. Seeds and bulbs sold well last time.

* The club’s Civic Project at St Paul’s is looking beautiful; several club members have been working on it.

* The downtown urns are looking very good, and four new urns have been ordered.

* Triangle Garden needs some helpers. Anyone can stop and weed and trim. The Welcome signs are good to; members were asked to

make sure plants do not cover up any of the signs.

* Plans are in the works for the Halloween Parade entry. So far, the

idea is to make astronauts with pumpkin heads and use corn shocks

and bales of straws to decorate the float.

* The memorial trees have had water bags put on them by the city. Members agreed to purchase

one large rock and four smaller rocks to landscape that area. The large rock will have the clubs name on it and the smaller rocks would

have the names of who the trees are in memory of.

* The club received a thank you note from John Kohler, the winner of the scholarship.

The next meeting will be Aug. 10 at Doris Hibner Family Farm in Wapakoneta at 7 p.m and pn Sept. 14

at Allison Brady’s home.
