Redskins place second at WBL tennis tournament

LIMA — Wapakoneta placed second overall in the Western Buckeye League standings this season after a second-place finish in the WBL Tournament on Saturday at the University of Northweste­rn Ohio.

Shawnee won the tournament title by a 52-44 margin over Wapakoneta. The rest of the field included Ottawa-glandorf (34), Celina (31), Bath (24), St. Marys Memorial (18), Van Wert (17), Elida (five), Defiance (two) and Kenton (one).

During the tournament, the Redskins received second-place performanc­es from both doubles team — Bailey Barrett and Elisabeth Good at No. 1 and Addisyn Cooper and Brooke Minnig at No. 2 — and No. 3 singles player Mara Stiles.

No. 3-seeded Barrett and Good defeated St. Marys Memorial’s Jodi Perry and Susanna Brown 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfin­als and topped Ottawa-glandorf’s Megan Welch and Lauryn Bockrath 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-0 in the semifinals. Celina’s Kaylyn Saunders and Whitney Jones defeated Barrett and Good in the title match 6-3, 6-1.

No. 2-seeded Cooper and Minnig defeated Van Wert’s Jennings and Coleman 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfin­als and dominated Ottawa-glandorf’s Kalya Brickner and Kristi Schneeg 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. Celina’s Audrey Albers and Michelle Elston topped Cooper and Minnig in the title match 6-3, 6-4.

No. 3-seeded Stiles was a 6-1, 6-0 victor against Kenton’s Lily Carmean in the quarterfin­als and a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Van Wert’s Mandy Burenga in the semifinals. Shawnee’s Rose Kottapalli defeated Stiles 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the title match.

No. 3-seeded Makenzie Schroeder shook off a semifinal-round loss to secure a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ottawaglan­dorf’s Sami Ellerbrock in the third-place match at No. 1 singles.

No. 4-seeded Abby Metzger dropped her final two tournament matches, including a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 loss to Ottawa-glandorf’s Alyse Balbaugh in the third-place match to finish fourth.

Shawnee was the regular season champion with a 9-0 dual meet record, followed by Wapakoneta (8-1), Ottawa-glandorf (7-2), Celina (5-4), Bath (5-4), Van

Wert (5-4), St. Marys Memorial (3-6), Elida (2-7), Deifiance (1-8) and Kenton (09).

In the overall standings, teams are awarded points based on where they finish in the WBL dual standings and at the league tournament. Shawnee had 20 points, followed by Wapakoneta (18), Ottawaglan­dorf (16), Celina (13), Bath (12), Van Wert (10), St. Marys Memorial (nine), Elida (six), Defiance (four) and Kenton (two).

VOLLEYBALL Botkins 3, Bradford 1

BRADFORD — Botkins secured a 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 29-27 nonconfere­nce win at Bradford on Saturday.

The Trojans were led by Janel Platfoot, who came away with 20 assists, 20 digs, eight kills and three aces.

Other players contributi­ng to the BHS win were Trayce Hendrickso­n (18 kills, seven blocks), Ainsley Manger (21 digs), Leah Steinke (14 digs, nine kills), Mallory Goubeaux (19 assists. Four aces), Ivy Fogt (nine kills, seven digs) and Kylie Mack (seven digs, five kills, two aces).

BOYS SOCCER Wapakoneta 9, Lima Senior 4

LIMA — Taylor Echols and Austin Bump each posted hat tricks as Wapakoneta defeated Lima Senior 9-4 in a nonconfere­nce match Saturday.

Echols and Bump scored four goals apiece, while Angel Coca kicked in the Redskins’ other tally.

Kyle Beach produced three assists for WHS, Conner Lause added two more and Echols had one.

Wapakoneta broke a five-match losing streak and improved to 6-5-1 this season.
