Potent Commodores invade W-G on Senior Night
WAYNESFIELD — Waynesfield-goshen takes
on Lima Perry in a Northwest Central Conference home game at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Commodores (3-4 overall, 2-2 NWCC) struggled to a 1-3 mark in their first four games before winning two out of three games
entering their matchup against the Tigers (6-1, 3-1).
“They lost some tough non-league games to Delphos
St. John’s (35-30) and Allen East (61-20), and dropped a NWCC shootout
against Marion Elgin (6862),” W-G coach Shane Wireman said. “Perry has an offense that has the ability to score points in bunches or on any play. The bigplay threat is in their game.”
Ryan Yingst is the Perry quarterback who has Terry Riley, Kobe Ochieng and Andrew Clavell as his top receivers.
Wireman said the
Waynesfield-goshen defensive backs will be tested by the Commodores.
“Our DBS need to play a solid football game,” Wireman said. “We have been preaching to them all week
about staying deep in our drops and forcing Perry to take underneath throws as
much as possible. We need to make sure that we come up and tackle in space.
“We want to keep (Yingst) in the pocket and not let
him extend plays with his legs. This will be the best
passing attack we will see this season.”
Wireman wants his Tigers to sustain long drives that control the clock.
“We would like to slow the game down, control the ball and get some timely
stops on defense,” Wireman said.
Running backs Blake Barnes and Hunter Craig are expected to get most of the carries for W-G against Perry. Cooper Roberts will
be directing the Tigers’ offense under center.
Wireman expects a competitive contest against the Commodores.
“This is our last home game and it’s Senior Night
so a couple guys want to give it a go,” Wireman said. “They may be limited in
some fashion, but with that being said, we will use the
next man up and give it our best effort. This will be a really competitive football game.”
