100 YEARS AGO, NOVEMBER 9, 1921

⬛ Committee No. 2 of the Presbyteri­an church will have a doughnut sale Armistice Day, November 11, at Miss Jennie Peters’ Millinery store, beginning at 1 pm. Leave orders with Mrs. W.E. Keve, chairman. Telephone, Main 1554.

⬛ The Alpha basket ball team, the first to get a start in Wapakoneta, has secured the Williamson School floor for practice purposes and will soon be ready to play a number of games. Invitation­s for games have been sent to many teams in this section of the state and a big schedule is anticipate­d. The team will furnish entertainm­ent for local fans this winter in case a suitable place to play can be secured. There is considerab­le talk about a city basket ball team, but the movement doesn’t seem to gain much headway because of the same bugbear that is holding back other organizati­ons—the lack of a floor.

75 YEARS AGO, NOVEMBER 9, 1946

⬛ Dale Mincks has announced Miss Mary Anthony has winner in the local Doris Dodsen limerick contest sponsored by the Uhlman’s Department store, of which Mr. Mincks is local manager. Miss Anthony’s winning last line to the limerick was selected after much considerat­ion, from the many interestin­g entries. The limerick, as completed by Miss Anthony, reads: “Said Ruth to Lucy and Grace,

⬛ A girl’s only charm’s not her face. It helps, I confess, But a D. Dodsen dress, Adds more to her charm and her grace.” Miss Anthony will now have the privilege of selecting her choice of a Doris Dodsen dress from Uhlman’s and will be entered in the national contest. The award for the national contest will be nine dresses, three for each season of the year. Judges in the local contest were Rue Melching, Irvin Conrad, and the Rev. Wilbur Vorhis.

⬛ Chief of Police Walter Menges announces that he wishes to remind local citizens of a City Council-enacted ordinance which will go into effect immediatel­y… for the purpose of regulating bus travel and the parking of other vehicles on Perry Street at the bus station. As set forth in the council’s action, “it is unlawful for any person to park a motor vehicle other than a commercial passenger bus in the area set aside for bus stops and in which zone “NO Parking” signs have been installed. Persons found guilty of violating these terms are subject to a fine not to exceed 25 dollars.

⬛ The chairman of the committees for the Blume High Freshman-sophomore Dance have announced that the annual fete will be held November 15 in the Blume High Auditorium. Mac Mcclintock and his orchestra have been engaged for the evening and a program of entertainm­ent has been planned. The doors will be opened at 8 o’clock and the entire public is invited to attend and enjoy the evening.

50 YEARS AGO, NOVEMBER 9,1971

⬛ Joe Lopresti has been elected president of the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce for the 1972 calendar year. Lopresti succeeds Ed Ewing to the post. Robert Wiesen mayer was elected first vice president, James Harrison, second vice president, and Dave Severt, treasurer. Maxine Pohl has been re-employed as executive secretary. The Chamber has also announced the next civic promotion to be sponsored by the organizati­on will be the free children’s party at Cinema Wapa the afternoon of November 26, with Santa greeting each child. Don Rhind is chairman, assisted by Dave Severt, Dave Smith, Lucas Fischer, William Slife, Jack Wiley, Albert Brown, and Gene Judkins.

⬛ Fire destroyed a barn containing a large quantity of oats. Straw, and hay on the property of Sylvester Steinke, Ruppert Road, Monday afternoon. The fire occurred at about 2;30 pm, possibly caused by an electrical defect. Botkins Fire Chief Ron Steinke said 7000 bales of hay and straw and 4000 bushels of oats burned in the fire, which also destroyed the barn. Cattle in the barn were saved, he said.

⬛ Twenty-nine members of the St. Jospeh FBLA Club attended the Northwest District Convention held here at Wapakoneta High School Saturday. Eight of St. Joseph’s members placed in these events. Pat Martens and Mary Lou Koenig placed 2nd and 4th in Bookkeepin­g I. Bonnie Madden and Carol Mosler placed t3rd and 4th in Typing I. Mary Malatesta placed 4th in spelling as an individual, while the whole team placed 3rd. Others on the team were Cathy Wies and Judy Mcgeorge. Joe Kohnen place 1st, Joe Neumeier placed 3rd, and Mary Malatesta placed 4th in the Business Math contest.
