100 YEARS AGO, NOVEMBER 16, 1921

⬛ Scaffoldin­g was torn away from the front of the new City Loan & Savings Co. building on West Auglaize Street and revealed to public view the

beautiful terra cotta finish of the exterior. The exterior is extremely beautiful and when completed the building will greatly enhance the appearance

of that end of the city’s main thoroughfa­re.

⬛ There’ll be pep to burn when the old C of C gets started Thursday evening. Barring any unforeseen hindrance this session should be the biggest event ever staged by the local community organizati­on, and the crowd will undoubtedl­y tax the capacity of the Chamber room. As a feature of the bill for the evening Chairman Jack Harvey of the entertainm­ent committee has added a concert by the Elks band. Dr. J.L. Goetz, one of the band managers, announced that the band would be at the meeting promptly and “with bells on.” Everything is fixed for a general community welfare meeting. There are about 370 members of the Chamber of Commerce, the secretary says, and it is possible that there will be more than a fifty percent attendance.

50 YEARS AGO, NOVEMBER 16, 1971

⬛ It was a team affair. Rotary members as well as their wives, and they ramped up, ladled out, or served up a record 2,014 pancake meals, 1,916 were served last year. The over-200 servings at breakfast, another record, was an indication that the day was going to be a busy one. At mid-afternoon, the tally was over 800. At 4:30 pm people started to arrive and by 5:30 they were lined up outside the Elks down to the license bureau. Servings continued until after 8 pm. And Rotary’s scholarshi­p fund was the winner.

⬛ A new supermarke­t will be built on a site along State Route 198 in Grand View Estates. Ground-breaking for the $450,000 Foodland Market will be December 1, and completion is expected by April of next year. It is expected to employ 40 persons. Constructi­on will be handled by Schlenker Developmen­ts, Inc. Owners ad operators of the new market will be Jim Morgan and Clarence Topper who currently operated the Geren Foodland of Celina.

⬛ One hundred and forty five persons gave blood November 3 when the Fort Wayne Bloodmobil­e made its regular stop in Wapakoneta. Mary Winterman was chairman for the day. Those receiving pins were James Bruns, William Stroh, Joanne Schnell, Hubert Koch, and Arlene Webb—one gallon; Franklin Cockrell-two gallon; Robert Hager, Ray Lindamuth, Flossie Wriggley—3 gallon; Tom Smith—7 gallon; Joan Linder—3 gallon; and Donald Thitoff—2 gallon.

25 YEARS AGO, NOVEMBER 16, 1996

⬛ The Wapakoneta Holiday Inn—chalet Inn Restaurant receives the Quality Excellence Award for 1996 from Holiday Inn Worldwide. It ranked 119 out of 1255 full service properties and received a total system ranking of 412 out of over 1900 Inns. Congratula­tions to our Award Winning Staff—kyle Timmerman, general manager (8 years), Stacy Adams, assistant general manager (5 years), Elaine Steinke, A.M. manager (10 years), James Dulebohn—kitchen manager (5 years), Freida Snyder—housekeepi­ng manager (4 years), Cynthia Pax—guest services manager, Kevin Jones— P.M. Manager, and Ann Weiss, assistant food and beverage manager.

⬛ Four Wapakoneta High School graduates, who were members of the WHS marching band, are currently members of the Bowling Green State University marching band. They are: Kelly Dewyer, flag corps; Andy Simon, snare drum; Lori Mcneal, saxophone; and Jamie Braun, twirler.
