Debris and waste paper piled too close to a heating stove were the apparent cause of

a $12,000 fire on he evening of November 26, when the Albert Berlet Garage located at the rear of 3 West Silver Street was completely gutted by fire with a total loss to contents. Firemen were called to the burning building at

seven o’clock. They fought the flames for half an hour before they were extinguished, only after they had gutted the interior of the garage, destroying early all of the equipment therein.

Berlet was reported to have suffered first degree burns about his face and hands received when he drove a car, a ’36 Plymouth, belonging to Fred Fisher, from the burning interior

of h garage. Two other cars were demolished y the fire, a ’35 Oldsmobile belonging to John

Steine, and a ’37 Plymouth belonging to Ike Morey. Mr. Berlet stated that the ’36 Plymouth, which was damaged about the windshield, was the only item salvaged from the flames. Berlet reported his loss of $10,000 partially covered

by insurance,approximatelt$5000. Elmer Neumeier, owner of the building and a resident of the house at the front of the property the garage stands, reported his loss at about $2000, this partially covered by insurance. The garage building, which measures 27 by 48 feet, was badly damaged by the flames with just the framework intact.

It took a mile-long train crew nearly 45 minutes to learn that the man they thought

had been hit by the train had walked away, and went home, after being brushed by the engine. Harry Hay, Wapakoneta, just missed being

struck by a B&O freight train Friday about 1:05 pm. The Wapakoneta Police Department reported the man was standing near the tracks at the Pearl Street crossing as the train was passing

through town. The train, which only brushed Hay’s body, caused minor cuts and bruises.

Ruby Stoll, 67, 612 W. Auglaize Street, died at 10 pm November 26, at Lima Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Stoll retired from school teaching two and a half years ago after being in the profession 25 years.

Bill Petty of Wapakoneta is ready to challenge the best outboard drives in the world in Lake Havasu, Arizona at the World Outboard championships. Petty finished 8th in the 1970 championships, and he is ready to move to the top with a 20-foot Molinari tunnel boat from Italy that will be powered by twin Mercury Twisters. If any man stands tall in outboard pleasure craft racing, it is Petty. The big man is one of the sport’s most versatile performers,

equally tough in single or twins, in a five mile heat or a 1000 mile marathon. He holds the all-time record for the now discontinued 1068 mile New Orleans to St. Louis race up the Mississippi. In 1969 Petty captured the attention of the boat racing world when he won an amazing 27 races.
