Wapakoneta picks up win over Kenton

- By AJ STREETER SPORTS Editor

The Redskin baseball team won their 10th game of the season and fourth win in Western Buckeye

League play over the Wildcats of Kenton. Wapakoneta was

boosted by a strong fifth and sixth inning

at the plate combining for all six Redskin

runs in the 6-1 home victory on Tuesday.

Kenton falls to 0-5 in WBL and 1-10 on the

season overall in a game where they had

chances to put up runs and held the only lead throughout the

first four innings. Wapakoneta was

eventually able to put up some runs on

strong at-bats as the Redskins put up six runs on six hits and

six walks. Following the game Wapakoneta Manager Jason Brandt

spoke about his team’s offensive approach, “

before the game we talked about putting the ball in play, especially on a day like today where no ball was going to carry into the

outfield, it was going to hang up. We had to

hit the ball on the ground, hit line drives, we were able to play

some small ball, which we have not done a very good job

of this year, we were able to execute a few bunts in one inning and we were able to get a ground ball which gave us our first run and then a bunt and a couple of others to give us some insurance there in the sixth,” said Brandt.

Braeden Goulet and Zach Rogers each had two hits. Goulet was the only Wapakoneta player to put up a multi-base hit with an RBI double in the sixth.

The Wildcats finished the game with bases loaded after not being able to take advantage of the first three batters reaching base in the top of the seventh. Wapakoneta’s Grant Bauer was able to come in and get the final three outs after Redskin starting pitcher Grant Jolly walked the first two hitters of the inning. Jolly pitched the first six innings only allowing one run on two hits and four walks. The Redskins were able to sit down 11 total batters on strikes, Jolly had nine and Bauer had two in his one inning on the mound.

Brandt talked about his team’s pitching performances, “Grant Jolly threw the ball well, Grant Bauer has been throwing well all year he’s just had some tough situations the last couple of games and that was a great opportunity to get him in with a nice lead and just allow him to be relaxed out there.”

Wapakoneta moves to 10-2-1 on the year overall and 4-2 in WBL games, they will now turn their attention to Friday as they are set to host Kalida, another WBL foe.
