75 YEARS AGO, JUNE 21, 1947
⬛ Bob Ewing, 74, former major league pitching ace, died at his home, 6 Logan Street, at 3:45, June 20, where he had been bedfast
since Monday. Death of the prominent sports figure of four decades ago was attributed to
complications. Native of Auglaize County, he was born in 1873 at New Hampshire. In November 1905, in the midst of his baseball career, he married Nelle Hunter of this city, and she with one son, Robert Ewing, Jr., of here, survives. Long Bob, as the late Mr. Ewing was known as during his baseball days, broke
into the national sport in 1897 with Toledo in the Inter-state Leage after having started his
career in sandlot ball in this city. After three years with Toledo, he joined Kansas City in
the Western League, where he remained until 1902, when he became a member of the Cincinnati Reds in the National League. During the next 8 years, until 1910, he reached the Majors at that time. After leaving the Reds he was with Philadelphia for two years and
St. Louis also in the National loop, until he retired from active baseball. He moved to New Hampshire and was engaged in operating a farm until 1910 when he was elected sheriff
of Auglaize County, which post he held for two terms, until 1923. Since that time he has made his home in this city and for a number of years owed and operated the Brunswick Cigar Store. He has since retired but has kept
his ever-living interest in sports, foremost among these, baseball and horse racing. For
several years he served as timekeeper at the Auglaize County Fair. In recent years he has
been honored guest at an annual party given at Kenton for baseball manager Billy Southworth.
50 YEARS AGO, JUNE 21, 1972
⬛ Private First Class Steve Bowersock, 20, grandson of MM Harley Bowersock, Route 6, was one of 32 men killed in a helicopter accident near Saigon, May 10. A member of the U.S. Army, Steve entered service May 3, 1971, and was transferred to Vietnam in December
of that year.
⬛ David Zwiebel, son of MM Marion Zwiebel, 210 Johnston Street, was graduated from Ohio State University on June 9. David, a 1968 St. Joseph High School graduated, received a bachelor of science in education degree.
⬛ Unofficially and unauthenticated, I have heard that the Museum dedication will be October 25.
⬛ The Rinky Tink Two—lee Watson and Charley Teeters, will be appearing at Sherm and Vic’s Place, Buckland, Ohio, June 22, opening night of Buckland Centennial Celebration
⬛ The new Foodland Supermarket in Wapakoneta opened today at 10 am. Present for the ribbon cutting were Safety Service
Director Harry Miller, Mayor Maurice Bryan, and Foodland Manager Richard Donovan.
25 YEARS AGO, JUNE 21, 1997
⬛ Joelle Johnson, 13, of Wapakoneta, was recently named a district winner in the 9th
annual Respecteen Speak for Yourself letterwriting contest. A 7th grader at Wapakoneta
Middle School, Johnson wrote a letter to U.S. Representative Michael Oxley. Johnson is the
daughter of Jean and C. Lincoln Johson.
⬛ Alpha Café Anniversary Party, June 24, Karaoke, 8 pm to 12 pm. Chicken wings
