100 YEARS AGO, JUNE 30, 1922

⬛ A meeting of the committee of members of the Presbyteri­an church who have been designated to take charge of contemplat­ed improvemen­ts, and consisting of the Elders, Trustees, and Ladies committee, held a meeting at Hamilton’s drug store on Monday evening, and approved plans prepared for the improvemen­t. The latter will consist of an addition to be constructe­d immediatel­y north and connecting with the present church building. The basement of the church will be equipped with the heating plant and comfort rooms for the men and women. The second or main floor of the addition will have a dining room 20 feet 6 inches by 35 feet 6 inches, kitchen and other space as may be necessary and as the completed plans may determine. The addition will be of brick to match the present building and the beautiful architectu­re will be preserved entirely…..when completed the entire structure will be one of the handsomest in this section of Ohio.

75 YEARS AGO, JUNE 30, 1947

⬛ The City Civil Service Commission was reorganize­d at a meeting in the offices of City Solicitor Dan Mckeever. Mayor Walter Harrod read the resignatio­ns of the old board, whose

members were Karl Kreitzer, Joe Hartard, and Ed May. He then appointed the following: Karl Kreitzer, Democrat, two years; Rue Melching, Democrat, six years; and George Schuster, Republican, four years. Dan Mckeever serves as the clerk for the commission.

⬛ Mrs. D.J. Braun and sons, Ivan and Louis, left two days ago for a two weeks’ vacation in Kansas and Colorado, where they will visit relatives and friends.

⬛ Eldon Berg, son of MM Egon Berg, Main Street, has taken a position with the City Loan office in this city.

⬛ Charles Pfenning, local painter and decorator, who was badly bruised in an accident while painting at the Telljohn building on West Auglaize Street last week is recovering at his home on East Pearl Street. His condition is improved.

50 YEARS AGO, JUNE 30, 1972

⬛ United Press Internatio­nal—the Neil Armstong Aerospace Museum, opening to the public less than a month from now, will be a visual treat for historians and air and space buffs and fans of the first men to set foot on the moon. The 6,000 square foot museum, houses beneath a huge earthen mound near Wapakoneta, birthplace of former astronaut Neil Armstrong, will feature flight equipment ranging from a19th century air balloon to a space capsule. The $1 million museum will be open informally on July 20, the third anniversar­y of Armstrong’s historic moonwalk. Formal dedication will be delayed until early fall because all of the exhibits have not been installed.

⬛ Joan Stephenson of Wapakoneta left Saturday for New York en route to Paris, France.

She will be attending classes there, at the Sorbonne University, for the next year. A daughter of Dr. and Mrs. M.L. Stephenson, and a 1970 graduate of Wapakoneta High School. Joan is majoring in foreign languages and has completed two years of study at the King’s College of Briarcliff Manor, New York

⬛ The Auglaize County Extension Homemakers Council held a lovely Tea and Reception June 22 at the Salem Evangelica­l Methodist Church. Mrs. Joyce Freymuth was chosen the 1972 Homemaker of the Year. 1st runner up: Mrs. Jeannette Lambert; 2nd runner-up, Mrs. Mary Ann Hepp; 3rd runner-up Mrs. Anna Lee Brandehoff; 4th runner-up, Mrs. Opal Miller. Mrs. Norma Doering was contest chairman.

25 YEARS AGO, JUNE 30, 1997

⬛ Louis Braun, 86, of South Perry Street, died June 29. Mr. Braun was an assembler with Monarch Machine Company, Sidney, for 33 years until his retirement in 1973. He also served two terms on Wapakoneta City Council.

⬛ Carolyn Kinninger, 77, of Ohio 67, died June 28. A homemaker, Mrs. Kinninger had worked for the former Diegel Canning Factory and the Fisher Cheese Company. She was also employed at the Home Savings and Loan Company until her retirement in 1984.
