BOTKINS – The homestanding Botkins girls basketball team exploded for 32 points in the second period to rout Shelby County League foe Sidney Fairlawn 60-27 Thursday night.

Botkins led just 10-8 after the first quarter. But they outscored the Lady Jets 32-4 in the second stanza to blow the game wide open with tough pressure defense. Six Trojan girls scored in the decisive quarter as they hit three trifectas, 10 two-pointers and three foul shots.

The Lady Trojans improved to 10-7 overall and 6-3 in the SCL with the convincing victory. Meanwhile, last-place Fairlawn dropped to 1-17 and 0-10 in SCL play with the defeat. "We turned them over and got transition buckets in the second quarter," said first-year Lady Trojan head coach Tyler Carson. "And when we didn’t score in transition we worked the ball well, got open looks and shot the ball well.”

Leading by 30 at intermission, the Trojans won the second half 18-15.

Junior Malanie Maurer led three Botkins players in double figures with 12 points. She drained two triples and scored eight points in the 32-point outburst.

Sophomore Delana Pitts contributed seven of her 11 markers in the second quarter. It was by far the highest-scoring quarter of the season for the Trojan girls. Junior Camdyn Paul netted 10 points, eight of which came in the second period. Seniors Kennedi Doseck and Lydia Dietz, and sophomore Jana Metz each chipped in with seven points.

“We had probably our most widely-distributed scoring game as a team,” said Carson. “We moved the ball well and it was good to see the girls playing good team basketball.” Jet senior Darcy Maxson led Fairlawn with 10 points.

The Trojan girls connected on 18 two-point goals and six treys for 24 total baskets. Botkins converted six of 14 free throws (43%).

SF connected on just 12 baskets, sinking 11 deuces and one triple. The visitors converted both of their mere two foul shots (100 percent). Ironically Botkins won its previous game with just 29 points, three less than they scored in the second period vs. Fairlawn.

Standing a solid third in the league, the Trojan girls play at conference foe Houston (6-9, 2-6 SCL) Saturday afternoon.

“Houston played us tough at our place last time, we only won by 10,” said Carson of the Wildcats. “I expect them to play zone, and it will be tougher to win over there.”

Botkins is 7-2 at home and 3-5 on the road.
