Lady Tigers Trim USV, 1st in NWCC

MCGUFFEY - The visiting Waynesfiel­d-goshen girls basketball team defeated rival Upper Scioto Valley 50-41 in a Northwest Central Conference clash Tuesday night.

Waynesfiel­d improved to 8-10 overall and 4-0 in the NWCC after the win to tie Hardin Northern for the conference lead. The Rams fell to 4-16 overall and 0-3 in the league with the loss.

The Tiger girls outscored USV 23-12 over the middle quarters to secure the win.

W-G trailed 13-11 after the first period, but rallied to lead 23-19 at halftime. They extended the margin to nine at 34-25 with an 11-6 third period run.

Both team scored 16 the final quarter.

“We shared the ball and got in a groove in transition,” said Tiger head coach Jocelyn Hennon. “We have really good endurance as six of our girls run cross country.

“Our fullcourt man pressure was key,” she added. “We play better when we go fast.”

Tiger post Raegan Hutchison tallied eight of her game-high 17 points in the fourth period, while Zaria Deleon netted 15 markers. Both players grabbed over 10 rebounds.

Tatelyn Faraglia added nine points.

Nevaeh Lowery led USV with 16 points. Nine of her points came in the first quarter as she nailed three triples.

Rams Shay Lawrence, Sydney Christense­n and Brielle Cotterman netted seven points apiece.

W-G connected on 19 baskets, making 18 two-pointers and one triple. The Tigers converted 11 of 18 shots from the charity stripe (61 percent).

The Ram girls sank 12 baskets, canning eight two-pointers and four treys. USV converted 13 of 21 foul shots (62 percent).

W-G hosts league foe Ridgedale (2-10, 0-3 NWCC) Friday evening during a girls/boys doublehead­er.

The W-G girls basketball team was seeded eighth out of 11 teams in their Div. IV sectional drawing Sunday.

Waynesfiel­d will play sixth seed Hardin Northern (12-7) in Spencervil­le Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in first round action.

The victor advances to take on second seed Minster (10-8) at Spencervil­le Feb. 18.

In a scheduling quirk, HN (4-0 NWCC) and W-G also meet at Waynesfiel­d in the regular season finale February 9 in what could be a showdown between undefeated teams for the NWCC title.
