FEBRUARY 15, 1923

■ William Pence, Union township farmer, residing seven miles east of city, exhibited at the Daily News office an egg that had lain for 33 years inside a mantel clock at his home, The egg had been laid away as a relic shortly after it had been colored by Mr. Pence’s mother, who used onions to provide a brown color for the shell. April 22 had been marked on the shell. The contents of the hen production, stale to the nth degree, had shrunken.

■ New billiard tables for the Masonic club rooms arrived Monday morning and workmen set about installing them immediatel­y. It is expected that the new furniture will all have arrived by the end of the week.

■ Dan Kirwan, Lima capitalist, former Goshen township farmer, has written A.E. Schaffer from San Francisco, having arrived there February 8 enroute around the world. Dan expresses entire satisfacti­on with the trip so far, stressing particular­ly the weather and excellent boat service.

■ Mel Shaw made such a hit with the basket ball fans of this city in the game against St. Marys that the management has secured him for regular player on the team. Louis Beirlein of Dayton, who has played every game this season, but was taken out of the game the early part of the fray against St. Marys because he was suffering from a severe cold, will not play with the Wapakoneta team anymore. No reason was given.

■ An eight-week experiment to determine the body’s use and retention of calcium is underway at Ohio State University with eight coeds serving as guinea pigs, including one Wapakoneta girl. The Wapakoneta girl is Mary Moyer, daughter of Mrs. Cleo Moyer, 309 W. Pearl street. A graduate of Blume High School in 1943, Mary is now a junior at Ohio State. She is studying the physical education course. Last summer Mary served as counselor at Camp Wyandotte, near Lancaster, and she expects to return this summer.

FEBRUARY 15, 1973

■ Swimmers from Wapakoneta who participat­ed on the Lima YMCA team included Patti Tull, who won gold medals-200 yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay-a bronze medal in 200yard freestyle and placed 4th in the 50 yard freestyle. David Schmalenbe­rger won a gold metal in the 50-yard backstroke and placed furth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Keith Katterhenr­y placed sixth in 100 yard freestyle. Trudie Marker won gold medals in the individual medley and medley relay in the 15-17 age group.

FEBRUARY 15, 1998

■ Carmen Tedesco, owner of Bella Mama Restaurant and Catering, will sponsor a benefit dinner for the 6th annual Keith Froning Scholarshi­p on February 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wapakoneta. The dinner will include Bella Mama rigatoni with meat sauce, with all the trimmings.

■ During its regular session on Wednesday night, Wapakoneta City Council will address legislatio­n that would provide over $87,000 in funding for the Wapakoneta YMCA over a five-year period. Local Y officials have requested of an annual stipend of $7500 from the city to defray staffing, equipment, and programmin­g costs. The YMCA board has also indicated a willingnes­s to operate and maintain the city swimming pool, contingent upon the city’s donation of $10,000 per year for a five-year period.
