FEBRUARY 25, 1973

A Wapakoneta native who passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma, January 7, was honored by the Tulsa Rotary Club in its publication, “The Tulsa Gasser.” Tribute was paid to Richard Clement Stueve, brother of Miss Thecal Stueve of Wapakoneta. It said in part: “It is altogether fitting for this Rotary Club to pause in tribute and memory to the last of its founding fathers. On the evening of January 7, at the age of 89, death came to Richard Clement Stueve, fondly known as Dick. Dick was born in Wapakoneta in 1883. He was married in 1908 to Barbara Wendeln of Minster and came to Oklahoma in 1913….It is the Rotary Club of Tulsa that must accord hm the status of father image in the history of the club. The Rotary Club of Tulsa came into being with 25 charter members. As it is said, the first shall be last, so it is well to know that Dick Stueve was the last of the Four Horsemen and he was the last surviving charter member of the club. Mr. Steve graduated from Wapakoneta High School in 1903 after attending his first eight grades at St. Joseph. Following high school graduation, he attended Ohio State.”

Investors Diversified Services of Minneapolis has honored sales representative Mark Bowsher of Wapakoneta for earning membership in its selected Multi-millionaire Club. Bowsher qualified by earning $2.214 million in 1972, to finish in 19th position.

St. Joseph Elementary School had its annual spelling bee on February 13. Two contests were held-one for intermediate (5th and 6th grades) and the other for junior high (7th and 8th grades). Rachel Barber, grade 6, is the school champion for the intermediate division and Lori Bashour, grade 7, from the junior high division. Frank Dietz, grade 6, and Paula Reineke, grade 8, are the alternates. The two champions will take part in the Auglaize County Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Dayton Daily News, on April 7, at 2 pm at Elida Elementary School.

Getting into the spirit of sectional tournament cage play you will see three banners across Auglaize Street. Two of them, one at the east end and the other at the west end, will be lettered “Good Luck, St. Joe.” The other will be strung across the street near Willipie with the words” Go, Knights, Go!” The banners will have a gold background with maroon lettering. The brainchild of Ralph Meinerding, Wapakoneta merchants footed the cost. Ralph made it clear that the Redskins of Wapakoneta High haven’t been forgotten in their tourney play.

It’s just that St. Joe has come up with the first undefeated cage team in the history of Wapakoneta, and the banners are one way of recognizing and celebrating it.
