Cory Lee Ryan, 24, was initially charged in Washington County Circuit Court with capital murder, aggravated robbery and theft of property in the death of Gustavo Ortiz.

Ortiz, 33, of Springdale was found Sept. 6, 2014, with a knife wound to his neck at the Econo Lodge. Ortiz died later that day.

Circuit Judge Mark Lindsay accepted the plea and sentenced Ryan to 35 years at the Arkansas Department of Correction on the murder charge and 10 years on the aggravated robbery charge.

Before Lindsay pronounced sentence, Ryan spoke to members of Ortiz’ family who were in the courtroom.

“There are no amount of apologies I can give that will bring Gustavo back,” Ryan said.

“I hope you can someday forgive me.”

Lindsay told Ryan he should try to atone for the crime and, should he someday get out of jail, turn away from the lifestyle that led to the killing.
