Some Tips For Dealing With Hot Weather

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist

The planning meeting for the Alumni reunion changed to 6:30 p.m Monday, July 11, in the Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

Has this June set another record for extremes in the weather? It has been an awfully hot and humid month, after the cool rainy spring.

Hopefully, the next two months won’t be so much hotter, as is usually the case.

But if so, some timely reminders — Remember to drink more water and natural juices. Also, sports drinks are formulated especially for the hot, sweaty weather, and contain some salt to replace that lost through perspiration. The advice is to drink consistently through the day, at least eight 8-ounce glasses. Do not drink caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. Avoid the heat if possible. For those who must work in the heat, take more breaks to cool off. If you plan to work out, or do lawn work, the best time is during early morning hours and late evening. Early morning is always cooler.

Definitely do not stay, or allow others to stay in an enclosed vehicle, even for a few minutes. We have heard of too many children who were left so.

It is so tempting to run the hose in the late afternoon, but if you are watering the garden or lawn, the best time is early morning when the ground is cooler and soaks up the water. Water evaporates when sprayed on hot earth.

Regarding the caffeinated drinks, coffee has 100-120 mg; black tea, 30-60 mg; green tea, 25-50 mg; decaf tea 1-8 mg; and herbal tea 0 mg. There is a “Lite” coffee available that claims to have half the caffeine.

Happy birthday to Dustin Taylor, Cindy Sparkman, Kelly Bridges, Brinkley Moreton, Chris Cooper, Angila Bradley, Danny Curtis, Kevin Barenberg, Opal Carter, Eulimma Harvey, Edenia Dodd, Brooke Bradley, Dwain Rigsby Jr., Gayle Watkins, Andrew Stathakis. Happy years all! Remember recycling next Monday.
